Cape Town – New Somerset Hospital in Cape Town has been forced to call in emergency personnel to transfer critical patients to other hospitals after the hospital suffered a power outage on Tuesday.

A source who did not want to be named told News24 the backup generators stopped working and was the cause of numerous emergency vehicles outside the hospital.

However, Ethne Julius, spokesperson for the hospital said the emergency centre’s generator was in working order. “The mobile generators were brought in to keep the Neonatal and Adult Intensive Care Units running,” she told News24.

The cause of the power outage is unknown and contractors were at the site to rectify the situation.

Numerous ambulances were helping dispatch critical patients from the hospital.

New Somerset Hospital upgraded the hospital’s electrical system in 2012 after an earlier power failure.
