Cape Town - Cabinet on Thursday called on South Africans to abstain, be faithful, and use a condom to help government's efforts to stem the HIV/Aids pandemic.

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, who also chairs the SA National Aids Council, will lead the World Aids Day commemoration in Mpumalanga on 1 December.

The theme of this year's commemoration is "Get Wise. Get Tested. Get circumcised".

"The platform will be used to apprise the nation about government's efforts to fight the epidemic, to increase awareness, and to intensify efforts to scale up interventions to curtail the epidemic," Public Service Minister Lindiwe Sisulu told reporters following Cabinet's regular fortnightly meeting.

World Aids Day would be used to revitalise the HIV counselling and testing campaign and to re-launch the medical male circumcision campaign.

"South Africans must play their role by making sure they abstain, if it is possible, be faithful, if it is possible, and use a condom if possible," Sisulu said.
