Cabinet condemns violence against women

2013-02-15 14:32

Cape Town - Cabinet on Friday expressed concern over the increase in brutality against women and children.

"Cabinet has noted with concern the recent increase in the brutal manner of the crimes perpetrated against women and children," it said in a statement following its fortnightly meeting on Wednesday.

"Cabinet condemns in the strongest terms the abuse of women and children."

President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday in his State of the Nation address the gang rape and murder of teenager Anene Booysen in Bredasdorp this month had highlighted the pressing need to combat violence against women.

"The brutality and cruelty meted out to defenceless women is unacceptable and has no place in our country."

Zuma said he had instructed law enforcement agencies to "treat these cases with the utmost urgency and importance".

Yep, as always, somehow by making some or other statement is considered a job done. Throwing in the odd 'condemnation' makes it a job well done

Oh boy, do I feel relieved. The thought that I had to go through the whole week end fearing violence against my family has been abated by this overwhelming condemnation by cabinet. Get off your f&^%$g asses!!!

Does it matter what prez Zuma says about rape, last time I checked he was a suspect himself.

  • talia.daniels.77 - 2013-02-15 16:03

I must say, that it amazes me that Zuma himself raped a woman and got away with it. He should start by putting himself back in prison. If the death penalty was reintroduced i think most of our government officials could stand in a queue.

My name is Pieter van der Westhuizen. I am a regular reader/commenter on the News24 site. My wife was murdered and probably raped on 7 February in the Riebeeckstad/Welkom area. A suspect who was out on parole was arrested the very same day and he appeared in court on the 11th. After reading about all the other rapes/murders since then, I found it odd that news24 decided not to cover this particular story. This is a pressing issue and I feel that by covering it or the aftermath in court will contribute to the awareness surrounding these occurrences. I want to put this in perspective; My wife was at our house and prepared food for a gardener(The man arrested for her murder) His only motive seems to have been rape as nothing except her cellphone was stolen. In another part of the country, a teenager who was under-age was in a place where she did not belong in the first place with people who were seriously suspect and she was subsequently raped and killed. The latter enjoyed numerous articles and extended coverage, yet Carmen van der Westhuizen died fighting in her burglar proved, security door-ed alarm-ed house while performing a task that most of your readers can relate to without any mention. I understand that this is no longer news and that these articles are pretty much a copy and paste operation these days, but I just wanted to get this off my chest.

somehow I think what you are saying is the truth unfortunately. she was white. I am sincerely sorry for your loss. I have no idea what you must be going through. I do hope and trust that somewhere along the line and in our lifetime these idiots will start to pay the price. we should really stop employing these people cause no matter how we end up paying the price.
