Johannesburg - Cable theft has caused widespread power outages on the West Rand, it was reported on Tuesday.

The damage could take four or five days to repair, City Power told The Citizen.

The electricity went off in Industria North, Delarey, White Ridge, Florida Glen, Bergbron, Quellerina and Northcliff Extension 19 on Saturday night, then again on Sunday afternoon.

City Power spokesperson Louis Pieterse told The Star the outage was caused by the theft of 33 000 volt cables at the Florida Glen sub-station early on Sunday morning.

As a result of the theft, oil leaked out of the cables and caused the sub-station to trip.

Pieterse told the newspaper that oil had to be pumped back into the cables, and had to be at the correct pressure before the sub-station could go back online.
