Pretoria - Life is set to return to normal in Mamelodi following the release of impounded minibus taxis. Some of the minibus taxis were released on Friday afternoon, with taxi operators promising to return to work.

"Mark my words, the community can be rest assured that we are back on track, we are working. No more violence," said Stemer Monageng from the Mamelodi Local and Long Distance Taxi Association.

"We really apologise [to the public] because we need their support and they need us to transport them."

Monageng spoke to journalists outside the Koedoespoort transport impound centre where the taxis were being released.

The vehicles were confiscated in a violent dispute over the introduction in the area of new bus operator AutoPax. On Wednesday police impounded more than 50 taxis and other vehicles in the area in a bid to stop violence against Autopax, which replaced the Putco bus service.

Five people were injured when shots were fired at a Putco bus. Other buses were pelted with stones. On Thursday commuters who depend on the taxis were left stranded as drivers went on strike in protest over the issue.
