Durban - Holidaymakers camping at a resort on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast over the Easter weekend had to be evacuated from their tents when a river burst its banks following heavy rain.

The Mercury reported that the Umtamvuna River came down in flood and threatened to wash away the campsite at The Old Pont resort near Port Edward.

Campers told how they were woken up by security guards at 01:00 on Easter Sunday morning and told to move to higher ground.

“The water was already lapping at our tents. Boats had been washed up and were floating near the tents and cars,” said Erroll Piper, who was camping with his wife and sons.

Piper said many people lost camping gear.

“We lost our skottel and gazebo. I even lost my cooler box filled with cold beer - it must be floating somewhere out on the river.

“In the morning, some people found fish in their tents. It was quite an adventure for the family.

"The good news for us was that we were able to save all the Easter eggs.”
