The 44-year-old officer died at the scene but his 31-year-old girlfriend survived, said Constable Noloyiso Rwexana.

She was being treated in hospital.

The shooting took place at a home in Dolphin Street, Strand just before 05:00.

Rwexana said the officer was stationed at the detective unit of the Macassar police station.
