Cape Town- The intersection of Strand and Adderley streets in Cape Town is to undergo a R24m rehabilitation, the city said on Wednesday.

Lane closures would be in effect from Thursday until late August, said Transport Mayoral Committee Member Brett Herron.

He said the road surface and base was at least 30-years-old.

Due to the cracked surface, water was leaking through the road and into the pedestrian and retail space below ground level.

Herron said the asphalt would be removed to apply waterproofing. A new layer of asphalt would then be laid.

“Once completed, the quality of the road surface will be significantly improved and the owners from the shops below will not need to be concerned about further leakages,” he said.

The work would be done in phases and one or two lanes would be closed at a time in sections under construction.

Herron advised commuters to avoid the area and find alternative routes into and out of the CBD.

“Those road users who cannot avoid this intersection must expect significant traffic congestion and delays.”

Parking and the entrances to parking garages would not be affected.

Future maintenance of the intersection was not expected for another 12 years.
