Cape Town - Police members have successfully brought down a man threatening suicide from a building in the Cape Town city centre.

Captain FC Van Wyk told News24 that police negotiators spent two hours talking to the 42 year old man in order to convince him to safely come down from the roof on the building.

The suicide threat had caused traffic chaos on Wale and Long Street as crowds gathered after the man was spotted on the roof.

Emergency workers and police cordoned off the area and while the male threatening to jump sat on the edge of the roof.

It is unclear what, if any, demands the man had made and it is likely that he will be psychologically evaluated.

Reports from emergency responders on the scene indicated that the "jumper" had climbed on to the roof at about 09:00 on Wednesday.
