Cape Town man braais puppy

2012-10-26 11:16

Cape Town A Mitchells Plain man will appear in court after he apparently put a puppy on an open fire and then ate it, according to a report on Friday.

The Daily Voice reported that the Cape Town man, 43, believed to be a drug addict, was arrested on Thursday on charges of animal cruelty and violating the Animal Protection Act.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) said it was one of the worst cases it had seen.

"When I spoke to him he told me: I slit the puppy's throat, skinned it and braaied it and I ate it," NSPCA inspector Peter Eccles said.

"He said he read it somewhere that the SPCA said it was OK and I explained to him that it was not."

According to the newspaper, an adult dog and her six puppies were found in the man's shack and rescued.

Provincial police confirmed the man's arrest and said he "instantly admitted" to the crime.

As disgusting as this initially sounds have we not all at some stage eaten lamb, veal or baby chicken.

      ClassWarTrotsky - 2012-10-26 11:27

      Exactly. Good point.

      JamesMWood - 2012-10-26 11:27

The difference being that those animals are reared for human consumption you chop

      kala.bafazi - 2012-10-26 11:32

      According to who James?

      hallo.daar.56 - 2012-10-26 11:32

So veal and baby chicken are expecting it?

      Tony Lapson - 2012-10-26 11:33

Doesn't change the fact that they also had brain function and a sense of pain and their surroundings.

      Jane - 2012-10-26 11:35

I am a vegetarian, and am against animals being eaten, (that is my personal choice) and I am completely sickened by this story, but then again I am also sickened by the millions of animals that get slaughtered every year and also end up on a braai. Is it because we view dogs as pets and that is the main reason why people are shocked by these sorts of stories? Yet it happens everyday to cute fluffy lambs so that someone can enjoy their veal, is it any less sickening because we have been conditioned to believe that its okay to eat "farm animals". Just a thought......

      frank.cornelissen.1 - 2012-10-26 11:39

Please report to the nearest SPCA to inform them that you are planning to eat your dogs! Stupid!

      Jane - 2012-10-26 11:42

@ShelleyV, my grandparents had a lamb as a PET, it used to come in the house and was as loved as a dog or cat, people who have farms often have one or two cows or pigs which are actually pets. Any animal can be a pet, who are we to decide. Given half a chance that poor pig or lamb you devoured might have made a very loving loyal pet!

      abra.kadaver.1 - 2012-10-26 11:52

Jane , veal doesn't come from lambs, but calves . Meat is delicious and good for you. If we were not meant to eat animals they would have evolved to taste like tofu, however they taste great, never tries dog and probably wouldn't but Asians eat them , and when have Asians ever been wrong?

      kala.bafazi - 2012-10-26 11:54

Shelley - I had a pet pig once. It was highly intellegent and would squeal in delight when it saw me. But we still all eat our pork chops or spare ribs. PS - In case you wondering, no I did not eat that pig. I had to give him away and last I saw of him he was fat, happy and sleeping on a couch. It could have just as easily been a sheep.

      LanfearM - 2012-10-26 11:56

kala.bafazi is actually right. No matter how much it disgusts me that someone would eat a puppy, I do eat other meat such as beef, mutton and chicken, and of course fish and seafood. I am not a vegan. It is my cultural background that make me abhorr the idea of eating a puppy, and of course it is illegal in our country as well. In other countries people eat horse, dog, cat, and a variety of animals and insects that those in our culture(s) wouldn't touch. We see animals such as those I listed above as pets, part of our families, and it is inconceivable to *us* to eat them. We do not see beef and muttom and chickens, reared to be eaten, as pets etc. @ Jane - yes, I frequently have a moral struggle with eating meat, but sorry to say, I am an omnivore and love my meat and veggies. Can't wait for the day that we have sufficient vat-grown meat, and hopefully even replicators one day, instead of slaughtering live animals.

      rynventer - 2012-10-26 11:56

Shelly, do you eat bacon or any kind of pork? It's been shown over and over that pigs are more intelligent than dogs. What is the reason that they can get slaughtered for consumption? Because that's just how it is right? Most of us eat meat, but don't be hypocritical about it. Chop.

      gerrit.vanpletzen - 2012-10-26 12:11

      Not pets.

      robert.cerff - 2012-10-26 12:17

@JamesMWood... You chop... the difference is one is cute... the other not considered do.

      JamesMWood - 2012-10-26 13:10

Kala, I am a chef and like to think I know a bit about the industry, there are some cultures that do eat dog, but to my knowledge it has not taken hold in this country. The dog is the only animal who loves his master more than himself and many have died protecting us, has a cow, sheep, chicken died in the act of protecting us?

      JamesMWood - 2012-10-26 13:14

Robert, I fail to understand your argument, kala at least makes a valid point even though I disagree with it, but yours is what exactly? Most animals are cute

      kala.bafazi - 2012-10-26 14:14

James - I am a huge lover of dogs. My two Jack Russels are as close to me as my son. I would never eat a dog and as you say in some cultures it is accepted. When I read the article I presumed, correctly in most cases, that folks would see it as a barbaric act. I thought I could preempt that reaction by showing that we all, well most of us, eat baby animals on a daily basis.

      Elisha - 2012-10-26 14:52

@Jane... exactly... we have been condition to think there's a difference between eating Lamb and Dog meat. There is no difference. Well, the flavour might differ!

Eating dogs happens in parts of the world... But yes it is cruel and it is disgusting... but is it disgusting when you eating your fried chicken or steak tonight ? didnt those animals go through a similar thing? Sorry for the pup and i personally wouldnt do it... but why do we make a big fuss when this happens but not when you pay for your meat in a supermarket?

      ClassWarTrotsky - 2012-10-26 11:56

Different cultural norms. Hindus think your beefburgers are horrific. I personally will eat any animal, it's all about the protein content, not the anthropomorphised cuteness factor. Very well and good for the liberals to moan about not eating this or that. All very well and good when you can nip to Woolies to buy your fillet mignons. (Unless you are boycotting Woolies, that is...)

  • megan.choi.526 - 2012-10-26 11:38

With the price of meat theses days...I'm not really surprised at this.

  • tracy.theron.33 - 2012-10-26 11:39

Disgusting!! How can you equate eating a puppy to eating veal or lamb? The one is bred for human consumption (which is pretty horrible when you think about it) while the other is man's best friend. If one can't differentiate between the two - then its only a small step up to eating human babies.

      nico.eksteen.7 - 2012-10-26 11:45

Mary, my little lam was my best friend when I lived on the farm. She also made a nice meal later on.

      charlie.elford.5 - 2012-10-26 11:48

      Uhm... actually... no skattie.

      kala.bafazi - 2012-10-26 11:57

So if I started a dog farm and specifically raised dogs for human consumption then this would all be alright? And I can guarantee you the next step is NOT eating human babies.

      seanrossouwslr - 2012-10-26 12:20

What an illogical argument! What about wild game? Do you enjoy kudu or wildebees biltong? Does being bred for human consumption alone make them OK to eat? Is that the critical factor in this question? No. The reason you find it disgusting is as a result of cultural anthropomorphism. If you were Hindu you would be stating the same argument about cows.

      jordaanjean - 2012-10-26 12:23

On the subject of eating babies. Sorry to add religion to this. But God made people eat human babies. In fact, their own babies. jeremiah/19-9: I (God) will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters.. Who is disgusting now?

      Elisha - 2012-10-26 15:57

Jeremiah 19:9And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons, and the flesh of their daughters For want of food; the famine should be so great and pressing. Jeremiah, that foretells this, was a witness of it, and has left it on record, ( Lamentations 4:10 ) ; and they shall eat everyone the flesh of his friend. The Targum interprets it, the goods or substance of his neighbour; which is sometimes the sense of eating the flesh of another; but as it is to be taken in a literal sense, in the preceding clause, so in this: so it should be, in the siege and straitness, wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their lives, shall straiten them; the siege of Jerusalem should be so close, that no provision could be got in to the relief of the inhabitants; which obliged them to take the shocking methods before mentioned. Jerom observes, that though this was fulfilled at the Babylonish captivity, yet more fully when Jerusalem was besieged by Vespasian and Titus, and in the times of Hadrian. Josephus gives us a most shocking relation of a woman eating her own son

  • dylan.rohleder - 2012-10-26 12:03

Now, before you respond to this, take a breath and then type away. A Pig is as loyal, loving and intelligent (if not more so) as dog. As are many other animals, raised in a loving home/farm not a small cage where they lose their minds and know nothing but torture. So while i would not eat a dog, based on some strange society norm, i do not think it is outright wrong. This is probably not the best story, seeing as the guy is "believed to be drug addict" and it was probably more of a cruel joke/sick idea that spurred it. but i would just like to point this out as you lather your chops in jimmy sauce and fry your bacon. It's food. I think it's quite a different thing to look it in the eyes and kill your meal than take it off the shelf. I would highly recommend an extremely good read - Eating Animals by Jonathon Safran Foer.

      danielle.vlok - 2012-10-26 12:14

The problem comes in with where the line ends up being drawn? If justifying the "braaiing" of a dog, how long will it be before lions and other animals not bred for human consumption will also be targetted as just a "source of meat".

      dylan.rohleder - 2012-10-26 12:21

That's quite a stretch in theory there Danielle. We eat Kudu, Warthog, Crocodile etc but we dont raise it for food. When someone braai's a Lion we can chat. When I can start buying lion at PnP or from Checkers, i'll eat my shoe. But in the end they ARE a source of meat, we just dont need them because pig, cattle and lamb is what's on the menu now.

      abram.spamers - 2012-10-26 12:44

@danielle - Who ever decided what was for human consumption in the first place? Who decided that a dog is a pet? Why is eating a lion different from eating a cow? The only line that makes sense for us not to cross in my mind is cannibalism.

      stephanie.sutherland41 - 2012-10-28 09:41

Just remember one little detail. We humans are a source of meat to. We call it cannibilism, in some countries it happens every day, i have seen footage, so watch out when your moral compass goes way off course, you might be a dinner on someones plate yourself bahahahaha Now thats what i call payback being a bitch....

all these arguments are "fluff"; fact is that we have no legislation against eating/braaing/slaughtering cows, sheep, pigs etc we do have legislation against cruelty to animals, legislation which also covers cows, sheep etc. However, there are grey area's because of cultural customs. I am not condoning what the druggie did and don't find his excuse even vaguely acceptable BUT if its ok for an ox to be slaughtered for a indigenous cultural ceremony are we not opening the door for other non-indigenous cultures to insist on their right to the same freedoms? Remember that in local cultural customary ceremonies, the louder the beast bellows the more happiness is being displayed by the ancestors... so if a person of Asian descent wants to slit "Poekies" throat and eat him/her do we have the moral right to condemn them? Now I'll sit back and wait for the hates
