The fire broke out at the Great Westerford building in Main Road, Newlands, near the DHL Newlands rugby stadium, at about 08:00 on Thursday morning.

It was brought under control by about 10:00.

Bloomberg reported that the offices of Futuregrowth Asset Management were severely damaged, and that staff and clients were evacuated as soon as the fire started.

A company spokesperson said the company's systems and data are backed up. Futuregrowth is Africa's biggest fixed-income money manager, and is a unit of Old Mutual.

School evacuated

About 1 000 pupils at the next-door Westerford High School were evacuated at about 08:15. They returned to class after 11:00, according to reports. There was no damage to the property, apart from smoke and soot.

Earlier, City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Theo Layne told News24 that the top floor of the building caught fire, and that no injuries were reported.

City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith told Sapa the fire was not related to the Muizenberg fire that broke out over the weekend.
