Cape Town - A Cape Town pastor accused of running a real estate scam has been granted bail, even though he had failed to appear in court for other cases, it was reported on Tuesday.

Cyril Jacobs, 44, was granted bail of R10 000 when he appeared in the Wynberg Regional Court on Monday on 15 fraud charges said to involve R700 000, The Daily Voice reported.

He had reportedly failed to appear on fraud charges in two other courts which had granted him bail, but had handed himself in after warrants were issued for his arrest.

According to The Daily Voice, Magistrate Goolam Bawa said this had counted in his favour.

"It is difficult to say if he will commit crimes like these again, but I have to give him the benefit of the doubt," Bawa said.

He said Jacobs had satisfied all bail conditions, such as having a fixed address, not being a flight risk and promising not to interfere with the case.

The court previously issued an order preventing the media from disclosing Jacobs's address because he has received death threats.

The pastor would report daily to a police station until his next appearance on 20 June.
