Cape Town sex trial to be repeated

Cape Town - The sentencing proceedings of an elderly man who pleaded guilty to multiple sex charges were stopped midway by the Parow Regional Court on Tuesday.

Magistrate Amanda von Leeve said the testimony Johannes Kleinhans, 73, had given in mitigation of sentence amounted to a denial of the charges.

He had voluntarily pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting three young girls over a prolonged period, and to the possession of child pornography.

Kleinhans testified in mitigation of sentence in June.

He was to be cross-examined by prosecutor Herculene Swart on Tuesday.

However, when the case was called, the magistrate halted sentencing proceedings and reversed Kleinhans's plea of guilty to not guilty on all 95 counts.

She postponed the matter to 5 September for trial.

Kleinhans was arrested in November 2010.
