Cape Town to assist with licences

Cape Town - The City of Cape Town may start a free drivers' licence training programme for the unemployed, it was reported on Thursday.

The Cape Times reported that sub-councils may set aside funding for this purpose, with the city appointing a driving school to provide the training and testing.

City spokesperson Kylie Hatton told the newspaper that the project was still in its conceptual stages and she could therefore not say who the beneficiaries would be and who the service providers were.

In the last two years, more than 3 000 people in the province had already benefited from free learner's licence training courses.

These courses gave tuition in road signs, rules and motor vehicle controls, with learners sitting through a simulation test at the end.

The community safety department did not, however, pay for or organise the actual learner's licence test.

Free, but they will still need a bribe to pass since no one ever pass without bribing the traffic cop these days

Stop being so negative :( This will open up job opportunities for the unemployed.

      Heinrich - 2012-06-21 11:59

Actually have to agree with Smilification on this. It is a good initiative that could bolster the amount of job candidates in the transport industry with actual licenses

      Sandra - 2012-06-21 12:36

We cannot afford this negativity. Knowing the DA, they will ensure everything is done above board to the best of their ability

they should have it for taxi drivers, that WILL save thousands of commutar a year.

At least then they are less likely to crash the cars they steal.

      Randomhero6661 - 2012-06-21 16:44

ag shame! because you are white??? life is tough only because you make it so...

      davenewza - 2012-06-21 16:54

@Nikita: If you are able to post comments on news24 then you definitely don't need a driving license subsidy. Stop being so selfish... there are people in way more need than you.

If you're unemployed you usually dont have money. If you dont have money you probably dont have a car, cant afford one or the running and fuel costs. So why bother wasting money in training them in the first place?

      lydonmcg - 2012-06-21 12:17

Because some jobs require a drivers license and that may be all that's standing between these people and employment...

      Pixie86 - 2012-06-21 13:34

small minded comment. You've clearly never sought a job before.

    Well done CPT

So free lessons to the unemployed, why did I not know this when my son went for his lessons. and it cost a fortune untill he got the right white cop that passed him. Will they get free cars to drive around in with free petrol as well. The unemployed cant afford to buy cars, maybe steal them.

And who is the service provider and how much will it cost. Will it go out to an open tender , or has somebody been earmarked for this tender.
