Cape Town - Two police officials, charged with extortion, corruption and defeating the ends of justice, are to go on trial in April in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Cape Town.

Jonathan Jerome Plaaitjies, 42, of the Mitchell’s Plain police station, and Morné Albert Britton Fasser, 30, of the Lentegeur police station on the Cape Flats, appeared before Magistrate Sabrina Sonnenberg, on Thursday.

They were informed that their trial would commence on 8 April.

Prosecutor Xolile Jonas alleges that Plaaitjies informed a woman accused in a number of criminal matters that he had spoken to Fasser, the investigating officer in her cases, and that "something" could be done to assist her.

It is alleged that Plaaitjies arranged for the woman to meet himself and Fasser, but on the strict undertaking that she would not inform anyone of what had been discussed at the meeting.

At the meeting, Fasser said her case was serious, and that she stood to lose her house and money because of it.

Fasser said he was able to "assist" her, for R10 000, which she paid.

All communication with Fasser had to be via Plaaitjies.

It is alleged that, at a second meeting, Fasser informed her that the dockets of her cases were to be shredded, but that two other officials involved in this wanted their cut, namely R20 000 each.

The accused agreed but, instead, reported this to a senior police officer.

Permission was given for an undercover police operation, in which the money was allegedly paid during a trap, and Plaaitjies and Fasser arrested.
