Cape residents surprised by rain, hail

Cape Town - Heavy rain and even hail surprised residents of the Western Cape on Thursday.

Die Burger reported that heavy showers fell in the Boland from around 15:00.

A farmer in the area reported 23mm of rain falling in half an hour on his farm.

Hail of about 2cm thick was also reported at farms in the Stellenbosch area.

The City of Cape Town reported that several roads in the metropole were flooded and had to be closed.

The area worst affected by road flooding was Somerset West.

Water also had to be pumped from private properties and residents in Firgrove were given assistance.

The wet and cold conditions were expected to continue on Friday.
