Cape rugby club in shock after two members die in crash

Cape Town - Two rugby players and a supporter from the Franschhoek Rugby Club in the Cape have died after the bus they were travelling in overturned when the driver swerved to avoid two cyclists.

According to the Sunday Times, the team, along with supporters, were en route on Saturday to a match in Grabouw when the accident occurred on the Franschhoek Pass in the winelands district.

The dead rugby players are Russel Riffel and Denzil Boonzier and the supporter was Abraham Lybrand. The two cyclists were seriously injured and airlifted to a hospital in Cape Town.

The Franschhoek team is coached by Archie Johnson, the father of Springbok rugby player Ashley Johnson.

News24 reported on Saturday that a total of 30 people were injured when the bus reportedly went off the road on the Franschhoek Pass.

"The injuries that are recorded as of now is standing at 30 people. Injuries range from minor to critical," ER24 said on their website.

Multiple ER24 vehicles and paramedics attended.

Western Cape emergency medical and forensic pathology services were not immediately available for comment.
