Car crashes after Cape Town stoning

2012-09-28 10:19

Cape Town - A motorist crashed into a barrier on a Cape Town highway after his vehicle was stoned, the Cape Times reported on Friday.

The man was driving along the N2 highway near the Cape Town International Airport on Thursday when his car was hit.

Western Cape emergency health services spokesperson Keri Davids said the unidentified man was taken to hospital.

A passing motorist, Ray Wright, said he was driving from the airport just after 14:00 when he saw two men on an overhead bridge holding a rock and dropping it onto the freeway.

"It hit a white car and it skidded all over the road before crashing into the barrier. The car got hit quite hard by the rock," Wright was quoted as saying.

"I could not see what happened to the driver but he hit so bad on the barrier I don't think he is still alive."

He stopped to check but a group of men emerged from the bush and started attacking a delivery truck. The truck driver escaped unharmed.

Wright said he tried phoning police but could not get through.

According to the report, two delivery trucks were stoned and set alight in the vicinity on Thursday, amidst wage talks in the transport sector.

Provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa said the strike stoning reports could not be linked to the accident involving the white car.

      aniken.vader.31 - 2012-09-28 10:32

will it not give us a free hand to retaliate? get rid of some idiots of the world?

      marc.rule - 2012-09-28 11:07

      TO LATE.

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-09-28 12:15

Seal off the bridges in those areas for a few weeks and let the residents deal with these guys.

  • logical007 - 2012-09-28 10:27

arrest these strikers that are intimidating truck drivers that are working. These thugs dropping rocks off bridges also need to be arrested. Cops are standing by watching the strike happening, and innocent people getting hurt? The cops are scared of taking up arms against these thugs because of the Lonmin incident!

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-09-28 12:17

If the cops see someone with a rock on a bridge they should just shoot the swine.

  • ken.rowe.509 - 2012-09-28 10:31

This stoning business on the N2 is total BS. The excuse is always "service delivery" protest, but the truth is that it is done with pure criminal intent. It's enough now, and we expect the City of Cape Town to respond with effective force. This poor guy is somebody's father, husband, loved one, going about his business and some savage has just screwed this all up - just for the sake of stealing whatever they can find in his car, probably going through his pockets while he lies there, seriously injured. It happens so frequently that traffic reports have taken on the casual tone that stone-throwing is just another obstacle that may delay your trip and should possibly be avoided. I still remember a boy getting hit in the face in the passenger seat a couple of years ago, and how distraught his Dad, the driver was - I have often prayed that he recovered fully and wish I knew how he was today (they were from Gordon's Bay, I think). My take on this is that the police should be using live ammo on these people - shoot to kill. With the rates we're paying, we expect to be able to drive around our city safely.

      aniken.vader.31 - 2012-09-28 10:40

apparently "service delivery-related violence" is outside of the boundaries of the law: if you are caught doing it, well, then nothing will happen to you! EVEN if you kill someone or hack them to death..!

  • nithaams - 2012-09-28 10:35

That is total BS. It is linked to the strike. I was passing by and you could clearly see they were trying to throw the rock onto the truck but missed and hit the car instead. I stopped behind the truck but did not get out of the car as I saw these idiots coming out of the bushes and attacking the truck. NO POLICE were to be seen anywhere.

      arthur.hugh - 2012-09-28 10:51

Wish I was there in my Bakkie, I would have driven over them. Bunch of B**tards.

      Warren Mudge - 2012-09-28 11:02

I agree that this is total bs. It is very easy for the cop spokesman to state what he did because they are too useless to do proper investigating. Alleged this alleged that is bs, common sense and logic connects this to the strike. Police will always favour the perpetrators and that is why they carry on with this violence, they know they will get away with it. Cops easily say lack of evidence and the criminals drink to their health in the shebeens while the innocent and their families suffer with deaths and exorbitant medical bills. We the decent citizens are already gatvol that the law favours the perpetrators in this country. SAPS you are useless and incompetent - do not answer phones, no response to desperate calls for help, always an excuse - no personnel, no vehicle available the list is endless!

There should be police patrol on that strech of highway 24/7.

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-09-28 10:41

On every highway during these strikes.

      gerry.gee.39 - 2012-09-28 13:32

I regularly drive from Stellenbosch to Cape Town on that road. Last month or so there have been Metro cops parked evry few km, but not enough.

  • JNaMolefe - 2012-09-28 11:13

Can't they respect? Don't they have their brains to avoid throwing at people's head??? They are like animal and i hope cops will arrest them!

      delish7564 - 2012-09-28 23:41

Thugs, they don't care.....that's the bottom line! That road can be scary at the best of times, but I would agree, there has been a greater Police presence.....didn't prevent this tragedy though :(

  • James Cussen - 2012-09-28 11:17

Sharp shooter - zeroed in on the bridges - take out any f%>*er who take a stone onto the bridge. They are murderers and savages.

  • John Peter Steyn - 2012-09-28 12:24

Jesus! Isn't it time for the ANC to deal with the animals that vote for them or are they scared of getting tough with their electorate of savages?

  • craig.daniels.90813 - 2012-09-28 12:52

My family travel on that road they are destroying a beautiful country...these uneducated fools..

  • darryl.maze.5 - 2012-09-28 12:52

All informal settlements must be removed from the sides of our national roads and airports. These informal settlments harbour these criminals that throw these rocks at cars and endanger lives. If drivers on the N2 see someone suspicious on those over crossings and you have a gun, shot the bugger first and then call the police.

  • andre.fourie.980 - 2012-09-28 13:24

I will shoot and ask questions later.

      edward.d.beesley - 2012-09-28 15:19

Yeah, Andre, I reckon a gun in the car, and when seeing some people with rocks up on a bridge, a few shots in their immediate direction will sort this business out - because the COCT obviously can't do anything about it ...

  • gerry.gee.39 - 2012-09-28 13:29

Years ago when those foot-bridges were erected, they installed wire mesh on them to stop people, rocks, etc falling onto the road. BUT, whoever designed this wire barrier slipped up badly, as there is a large gap at the bottom. When I approach these footbridges and see people standing still above my lane, I change lanes. The gap is big enough for large rocks to be thrown onto cars. Cape Town City Council TAKE NOTE!

      delish7564 - 2012-09-28 23:43

Me too Gerry. You have to have your wits about you at all times!

Just love the comments made in these newspapers , it shows how South Africa is racially devided . First African got robbed of the land resources , dignity . In a imperialist , neo-colonised country injustice of the goverment that was appointed by whites to save their stolen resources from colonial powers injustice is a law , then revolution is a must .
