Pretoria - A man was killed and a female police officer was critically injured when a car crashed into them in Pretoria on Saturday, paramedics said.

"Police pulled over a vehicle and while the driver and the officer were talking another car crashed into them," Netcare911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said.

He said when paramedics arrived at the scene in Lynnwood Road around 05:30 the driver had already died. The officer suffered critical injuries and was stabilised at the scene and rushed to the Netcare Pretoria East Hospital.

Sad news in the morning. I noticed several times police officers pulling poeple just about anywhere in the roads, on the most dangerous parts of the road. Condolences to the deceased's family and wishing the cop a speedy recovery.

True... Coming to work on a busy road, every so often people get pulled over on a sharp bend, with long grass growing, so oncoming cars can't see people are being pulled over. That said, people should not speed around bends.....

Sad news.... The policewoman has just died ... Try hold off those ridiculous bribe comments below. Someone had just lost a mother or sister or wife or mother ..

There is no indication that the driver had been "speeding around the bends". A favourite pullover spot for the metro police is on the corner of Hendrik Potgieter and Doreen road, on a bend, and these are random stops.Condolences to the families of the deceased

My condolences to the family and friends of the deceased driver, I also wish the traffic officer a speedy recovery. Now that winter is setting in, visibility at 05h:30 in the morning is poor. However some traffic officials need to have a little logics when pulling over vehicles for inspection. If they want to pull of vehicles, then do it where the area is well lit up and where it is safe for the motorist to pull off without endangering anyone's life.

I drive Lynnwood Rd daily (nightly) There as so many speeding cars, drunk drivers (many students). 2 nights ago at 02h00 comming from OR Tambo 2 students nearly drove me off twice. I cot out of my car at a robot and asked them to please go back to the dorm and go to bed as they will get killed. I wished there was an officer close by. stays very sad to those left behind.

I was there I saw it happen. I agree that it was not a good spot to pull people over but all can speculate and assume what you want fact of the matter remains that it was an unfortunate accident and the people in the silver golf could have stopped and not drive away!

      Antwahn - 2012-05-12 21:12

Some accidents are more avoidable than others. Traffic cops should act with due professional alertness to other traffic (It's their JOB!). Noting else detracts from this. The PAIN it causes. On this page alone, we witness but a tiny fraction of it. Strength to all of you.

      Zirk - 2012-06-11 14:24

Did you make a statement to the police?

  • Pieter - 2012-05-12 20:18

R.I.P ou Eddietjie :(

I was pulled over coming off the R21 onto the N1 north last night. I was also surprised at the choice of spot. I thought it looked like a dangerous place. Fortunately not a lot of cars was around.

  • Ragel Masenya - 2012-05-13 15:28

People always blame cops, the cop ws only doing her job and it was unfortunate for both of them. what about people who drink and drive, make an accident and run away from a scene. Stop drinking the whole night and drive like crazy.

  • delani78 - 2012-05-16 06:40
