Bloemfontein - Seven people died in an accident involving five vehicles on the N6 between Redderburg and Bloemfontein on Sunday, said Free State paramedics.

ER24 officials said two vehicles appeared to have initially collided head-on. A truck and two other vehicles then crashed into the wreckage.

According to ER24, there was "absolute carnage" at the scene.

"Parts of the wrecked vehicles were strewn across the scene and bodies lay scattered and others trapped in the mangled metal of what remained of the vehicles."

Five people had already died when paramedics arrived on the scene, while three others had suffered critical injuries.

One critically injured patient died as paramedics attempted to stabilised him on the scene.

A seventh victim died in hospital shortly after arrival.

Police were investigating the cause of the crash.
