Johannesburg - A father and his daughter were killed in a head-on collision on the Gemsbok Park road near Upington, Northern Cape police said on Sunday.

Raymond Jansen, 38, was killed in the fire that engulfed the two cars, a Toyota Corolla and a VW Golf, after the collision in the early hours of Saturday morning, Lieutenant Sergio Kock said in a statement.

His 10-year-old daughter, Kaitlyn, died on the scene after she was pulled from the family's Toyota.

Jansen, his wife Amanda, 40, and their children, 1-year-old son Raymond, and Kaitlyn, were returning from visiting their oldest child Bradley, 16, at the hostel of a local school.

A 28-year-old man was alone in the Golf. Other motorists managed pull the four occupants from the burning cars. Jansen, however, was trapped.

The cause of the accident was unknown.

Speed kills, according to the govt. If manufacturers pay to exceed limits speeding is in order?

Agree 100%. Every car should have a governor, set at 100km/hr. Then watch while the death toll plummets.

Yes, Clive. It's true, speed kills. The other vehicle involve is the new Golf 7 that will be launched this week in RSA. VW SA confirmed that the driver of Golf is one of their employees. As the family of the deceased, we don't want to speculate as to what happened although we would like to have closure. The law must take it's course.

Whatever the cause the loss of life is tragic especially the life of a child. I'm so sorry for the sad state of road safety and law enforcement in this country that is directly responsible for this tragedy. Rest in peace
