AMIDST the excitement of yesterday’s Comrades Marathon, two vehicles belonging to spectators caught alight in Camperdown, emitting a cloud of thick black smoke.
The vehicles were destroyed in the blaze, and the fire caused a traffic jam on the Pietermaritzburg-bound lane of the N3, but no injuries were reported.
RTI spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said that the vehicles were parked off the road and there were no occupants inside, but the fire caused delays on the N3.
“Traffic came to a standstill. The main issue we faced was rubbernecking. Some of the smoke from the blaze blew on to the N3 which caused slight visibility difficulties,” she said.
The Msunduzi fire department, which was among emergency services that responded, said it was unknown what caused the fire but investigations are still under way. People at the scene speculated that the fire was started by an over-heated exhaust or a cigarette stub.
