Cat survives washing machine cycle

2012-05-04 08:24

Johannesburg - A pavement-special cat spun around in a washing machine for an hour and 45 minutes - and survived without a scratch, according to a report on Friday.

"The vet told me she had lost seven of her nine lives," Karin Bennett, 63, told The Star newspaper.

"I can now see the funny side of it, but you can imagine my shock."

After returning from a shopping trip, she heard distressed meows from her cat, Tabitha Twitchet. She searched everywhere, until she spotted her black, furry face through the washing machine's glass.

Tabitha was rushed to a veterinarian where she was treated for hypothermia. Her kitty was not impressed after returning to her Randburg home from the vet.

"She turned her back on me totally, like it was my fault that she was washed and rinsed. It could happen to anybody. She must have been sleeping in there," said Bennett.

She added that she's grateful she stopped using hot water in her washing machine due to the higher cost of living.

      Charles Dumbwin - 2012-05-04 09:39

      was almost a catastrophe

      Jackie - 2012-05-04 14:41

I did it about 4 years ago with my then kitten of 5 months old! Very small kitty & loves to sleep in the laundry! I had bundled her up with a load of sheets. Because shes always with me I realised she was missing in about 10 minutes. Searched everywhere and then checked the washing machine. I still have nightmares about it. She still sleeps in the washing. I am so glad this ladies kitty survived!

      Ruann - 2012-05-04 10:36

      I agree Andile, It's hilarious !!!!

      stewart.mackay001 - 2012-05-04 11:26

Agree with Andile. Wouldn't be so funny if the cat had drowned. Poor thing.

  • Vimalin - 2012-05-04 08:41

who turned on the washing machine?

      Marion - 2012-05-04 10:54

Feel very sorry for this cat. Who left the door open and who filled the washing machine with laundry? If it had been a top loader this story would probably have had a very different ending.

  • Koos - 2012-05-04 08:45

This is the only “good” news that news24 could come up with? This is news?

      heinrich.beukes1 - 2012-05-04 08:58

@Koos would you rather read of people being murdered and assaulted all the time. It is not an everyday occurrence so for me it is news worthy even better than this Malema stories.

      Koos - 2012-05-04 09:34

No Firehawk07, I don't want to read about murder all day but seriously if this is how far good news stretches in SA then is truly is a sad state of affairs don't you think?

  • charmainetholakele - 2012-05-04 08:47

Wow. A cat is the only Boss..Bosso ke mang?ke Kitty..•with many live

  • Vic - 2012-05-04 08:50

How does someone not notice a cat in a washing machine, when it's being loaded?

      lincoln.grimett - 2012-05-04 09:04

same way you wouldn't notice a lion in a concrete mixer. lol

      Deon - 2012-05-04 09:56

Some people leave the washing door open.

      Jean - 2012-05-04 10:08

Ok, guys just stop it, you killin me

      Bruce - 2012-05-04 14:57

Very easy with front loader! I am just grateful that none of my cats have ever chosen the washing machine as a sleeping place, since they do sleep in the strangest places and positions! But is is definitely not a joke, I know someone who lost a cat that way.

  • JJ - 2012-05-04 08:54

Hope she washed her clothes again...

  • Genesistt - 2012-05-04 09:05

Shame! But on the bright side, the cat won't need a wash for a while. Hehehe!

  • sudhir.hira - 2012-05-04 09:06

    how does this make news?

  • Philip - 2012-05-04 09:07

And this is news worthy how? She should be charged with cruelty towards animals, as she is clearly not capable of take proper care of her pets.

  • Loo - 2012-05-04 09:14

LOL its obvious one should not make jokes on news24 it seems :(

  • Erich - 2012-05-04 09:17

Nobody will blame the poor cat if she shows signs of intoxication for the next 6 months.

  • Joelene - 2012-05-04 09:18

Poor baby. Mom and kitty must have been very relieved to hear no permanant damage had taken place. I have a very adventurous little kitty who loves watching the washer going round.. Guess I'll have to do a roll call before the big switch on ha haha. Glad everything worked out ok.

  • Rudluv7 - 2012-05-04 09:28

    Cool story yo

  • rbsalvatore - 2012-05-04 09:30

  • Ted - 2012-05-04 09:42

One life down. Eight lives to go! Cool. Living proof a cat has many lives!

  • Chris - 2012-05-04 09:44

This would make for some great publicity for Omo if one of her spots mysteriously got washed out.

      Jacques - 2012-05-04 11:00

Usually I refrain from saying this, but... LMFAO! (literally)

  • Pablo - 2012-05-04 09:51

Did the cat let himself in, closed the door and turned on the appliance? That old lady is just sick, and this artcle is a total waste of bandwidth.

      Bruce - 2012-05-04 15:02

People often put their dirty laundry in the machine, to wash when it is full. Cat love sleeping on laundry. Fortunately mine tend to chose the clean laundry in the laundry basket just off the line. I bring it in, by the time I have gone back for a second lot, a cat is asleep on top of it!

  • Elmarie - 2012-05-04 09:56

Wonder if she used 'stay soft'? Sorry, could not resist... At least the cat survived - thank goodness!!!

      Rumbie - 2012-05-04 13:44

  • Jean - 2012-05-04 10:04

Huh? what did you just say? 1hr 45mins? and comes out not dizzy? this is a cool cat!

      Charles Dumbwin - 2012-05-04 10:32

it's the fur with the fizz, not the dizz

      Marion - 2012-05-04 10:56

It was a cool cat - lady was using cold water.

  • robyn.hillman - 2012-05-04 11:02

Thank God he survived!!! Poor thing

  • nsda29 - 2012-05-04 11:53

Now that's one Cat with more lives! Its going to come back with vengeance

  • Shellerjc - 2012-05-04 12:21

and THATS why you keep the doors to ANY machine CLOSED AT ALL TIMES!!!

  • Rumbie - 2012-05-04 13:42

Omw LOL. This story and comments has jus made my day. Cnt stop laughing

  • sally.lewitt - 2012-05-05 06:42

Hehehe! Heart warming story for a change! At least kitty is fine and bet will stay away from the machine in future.

  • Deana - 2012-05-05 08:37

I do not find this story amusing to say the least! How did the old lady not see the cat? Surely common sense must prevail - close appliances doors! Next time a grand child could drown! What a traumatic experience for the cat!

  • Liezel Watts - 2015-04-15 21:20

I dont think this story is funny. They should not own any animals. Just glad the cat survived. He should be taken away and given to someone who cares for their pets.
