2012-11-02 13:01

Virginia - Welkom cemetery killer Maartens van der Merwe was jailed for life on Friday by the Virginia Circuit Court for the murder of Michael van Eck.

Judge Ian van der Merwe also sentenced Van der Merwe to ten years for robbery with aggravating circumstance and five years for desecrating the body of his victim.

He was accused of killing and dismembering Welkom resident Michael van Eck, 23, with his fiancée Chané van Heerden.

Judge Van der Merwe did not declare Van der Merwe a dangerous criminal.

Maartens van der Merwe applied for leave to appeal on the murder charge.

The judge denied the application.

Why can't they get these people to perform hard labour? Surely with the dwindling economy they can build roads, or break rock or even work at water purifying plants.better still , murderers can wash bodies at mortuaries or dig graves at the cemetery. I fail to see the punishment in this set up. It looks like free accommodation to me

What happened to humanity? All the news articles that I'm reading consist of murder, rape, fraud/corruption! The entire world is heading for a total downfall. Who agrees with me that the crime statistics are a load of bullsh#t? Crime is destroying us its very sad because I don't think I will survive and grow old in my beautiful country.I wouldn't be able to start a family and live a safe and peaceful life in SA

why cant south africans make crime a big a deal as racism or politics and other things that dominate our headlines, surely if EVERYBODY can mobolise like when we mobolise for issues that are not even as big as crime, then we can pressure government to make harsher laws and a quicker legal system which would make it safer for good people.or are we just used to this violence now?
