# Census cover doesn't add up...

2012-11-02 08:24

Cape Town - The front cover of one of Statistics South Africa’s census documents shows a teacher at work, with 21 ÷ 7 = 6 written on a black board behind her.

The picture has been widely spread on Facebook, with several users commenting on it - asking whether it was a reflection of other census data and what it said about education in SA, reported Die Burger.

Census communications manager Trevor Oosterwyk said people had the wrong end of the stick.

“If you look closely you will see a line drawn over the 6,” he said on Thursday afternoon.

“The only conclusion that I can come to, is that the teacher is busy explaining the methodology of the sum [and showed out 6 as the wrong answer].”

Elsewhere on the board the sum is done correctly with 3 as the answer.

He said the sharing of the photograph was perhaps not such a bad thing as it gave people more to say about the census and promoted their products.

Bwahahahahah, love this. Classic!!

maureen.churchill.9 - 2012-11-02 09:33

Clifford its not trying to make you look stupid, whoever photographed the board for the cover are the idiots, straight away one would get the wrong impression. Not done in good taste. come on guys be fair.

SharonE - 2012-11-02 09:49

Once when I went to register to vote, the IEC official stuck the sticker in my ID book upside down. I remember thinking that this person is in all probability going to count my vote! Scary stuff indeed..

• Jo.Davies123 - 2012-11-02 08:34

Hands up who is surprised. There is very little that surprises me these days.

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." - Winston Churchill.

george.outremer - 2012-11-03 09:22

This issue is much ado about nothing. On closer inspection, it can be argued that the teacher wrote 21 / 7 = ( ) on the board and asked the class for the correct answer. Someone in the class obviously responded (6). To which the teacher then wrote the incorrect answer on the board and then demonstrated underneath the problem that the answer given by the student was incorrect. The (6) clearly has a line through it. Guy's c'mon, focus!

• themba.mkhize.5494 - 2012-11-02 08:34

how boring

JuliusYouPrick - 2012-11-02 08:53

If you don't have anything smart or funny to say then raise your hand and put it over your mouth!

mfrater - 2012-11-02 08:59

... and when your children become garden boys and maids, I hope you think back to this and ask where it all went wrong ;)

richard.hipkin - 2012-11-02 09:51

@Julius, practise what you preach.

sean.wolf the uneducated is a result of apartheid as they did not provide sufficient education for non-whites. but in saying that it is has been 17 years and nothing has changed but has gone worse. so people need to wake up and smell the coffee and realize the anc is robbing everyone from being successful in life..

• robbie.crouch - 2012-11-02 08:35

Some people really need glasses... The education system may be flawed but the teachers are NOT the problem, most of them are very dedicated.

art5SA - 2012-11-03 05:40

Dedicated to their respective UNIONS... YES!

• karel.dutoit.50 - 2012-11-02 08:36

I've NEVER had a teacher show me how to do math wrong. That is just silly. So what if there is a line through. (can't see it by the way)

pete.moore.12 - 2012-11-02 08:43

Exactly, I am a teacher and I wouldn't teach my kids how to do math correctly by showing them an example of how not to do it. Stupid!

merven.halo - 2012-11-02 08:46

Re calibrate your screen, the line is clearly visible on my Mac.

napolita.kio - 2012-11-02 08:48

Slowrider - 2012-11-02 08:50

I think it is just your mac that is failing.

Andrea - 2012-11-02 09:21

Sad, really, that this teacher chose to show the wrong answer first, especially considering the masses are not able to remember more than the first line.

elgh.elgh - 2012-11-02 09:21

Merven - The line is not the issue here, well done for calibrating your Mac screen, you win a underwater hair dryer.

richard.hipkin - 2012-11-02 09:52

This proves what I have always suspected. White people are blind.

robbie.crouch - 2012-11-02 09:53

If it was used in a class quiz it is quite likely to be shown incorrectly. I am ashamed at how many here want to find fault where there is none.

herman.bester.58 - 2012-11-02 09:55

Hey everyone. Merven has a mac

herman.bester.58 - 2012-11-02 09:57

Hey no wait. Merven has a mac with a calibrated screen! Wow!

johan.uys.75 - 2012-11-02 10:03

What's wrong with a teacher doing a last review before the final Grade 12 exam?

Doep100 - 2012-11-02 11:42

Hey Herman, how do you know if someone has an Apple? They TELL you.

roger.kaputnick.90 - 2012-11-03 06:33

Just dumb asses , pay them no mind.

• brett.dugmore - 2012-11-02 08:42

If you look closely, the 6 is actually the answer to the sum above (30 / 5), partially obscured by the teacher's hair. The answer to the sum 21 / 7 is on the next line on the left.

arthur.hugh - 2012-11-02 08:46

Spot on!

gerald.umraw - 2012-11-02 08:50

absolutely brett, why people could not pick that up is beyond me. The only issue with that picture is that the teacher cannot space her work out coherently which has seemingly led to the confusion. As for the census comms manager, he should be fired commenting on issues he clearly has no idea about.

matli.mokoena - 2012-11-02 09:09

don't bother Brett, people just want an excuse to take a stab at our teachers.

FeebleGastro - 2012-11-02 09:24

You need one hell of an imagination to get to that conclusion.

carel.scholtz.16 - 2012-11-02 09:32

If an adult "communications manager" can't even figure this out, how on earth will the kids be able to? The teacher can't even spread individual sums on the board (probably not to look stupid when she gives wrong answers). But thumbs up to brett figuring this out ;)

klipkop.degroote - 2012-11-02 09:44

that aint hair Brett. Beanie type thingy. But yes I agree with you.

DuToitCoetzee - 2012-11-02 09:51

May be Brett, but even if not, one can also argue that she had shown that one must not only write the sum down, but also use the correct method, as shown below, because you can end up with the wrong answer.(6 with a line through) Some even pretend to be teachers and deny that this method(indicating how one can make mistakes) get used. Bullsh@t!!! It get used everyday. Some people will always use cheap entertainment to suit their brains's capacity!!!

michelle.h.koekemoer - 2012-11-02 10:01

Wonder if those children she was teaching have that depth of perception though Brett.

victor.luyt - 2012-11-02 10:57

Try again dude, the 3 you see is the answer for the next problem

• rdeacon - 2012-11-02 08:43

if you look below the circled equation it is re written in a different format with the correct answer... not an ideal photo to use but you can see what the teacher was doing...

paul.maarman - 2012-11-02 09:11

totally agree with you rdeacon, could seriously have gone with another one...

robbie.crouch - 2012-11-02 09:57

and that is why we should not be blaming the teachers but rather the ineptitude of the politicians in not providing the means to the teacher and pupils (leaner just sounds wrong).

• napolita.kio - 2012-11-02 08:46

"....with 21 ÷ 7 = 6 written on a black board behind her." She may be black, but the board just aint! When in a glass house, throw not them stones.

kenpeg.dawson - 2012-11-02 10:04

Them stones, them stones sounds like some ad or the other.

Andrea - 2012-11-02 12:12

them firestones!

Doep100 - 2012-11-02 12:14

I was going to say something about that CHALKBOARD but now that the race card has been drawn, here goes. That board is not black. It's not white either. It's coloured! Hows that for rainbow teaching?!

• kuschke1 - 2012-11-02 08:46

Even Oosterwyk's explanation is flawed. The only accepted notation would be for the line to be through the " = " sign. He clearly does not know simple maths either.

napolita.kio - 2012-11-02 09:11

What is "simple maths"? Do you mean arithmetic, perhaps?

kgotso.selome - 2012-11-02 09:29

math literacy

• Danie Gerber - 2012-11-02 08:49

the funny thing is, when the people for Census went around counting all the residence they never came to my house. I know of alof of people that wasnt counted. So how can we trust the census figure?

denise.herbst.5 - 2012-11-02 10:08

Mine either!

• sithembiso.dlalisa - 2012-11-02 08:50

what if the answer is 6/2?? we just dont see this "/2"...

• barnett.di - 2012-11-02 08:52

Most likely the teacher asked a student for the answer, wrote down the 6 supplied, then went on to explain why that is an incorrect answer.

DuToitCoetzee - 2012-11-02 09:56

Yes, I agree Barnett, but the thumbs down shows not a lot of people were ever in a math class or even did some teaching. They just want to believe what they want to.

• Barend.Jacobus.Engelbrecht - 2012-11-02 09:10

There might be a line through the 6, but sure as hell no other sum on the board with the correct answer... This isn't about race. It is about the fact that our education system is ranked one of the worst in the world (140th out of 144) even lower than Lesotho, Swaziland and, believe-it-or-not, Zimbabwe. http://www.ciibroadcasting.com/2012/09/13/sa-education-system-ranked-one-of-the-worst-in-world/ Why don't Census give us the real figures: corruption, theft, murder, etc, etc, etc... (@Clifford - that means the list be goin' on...) Government should stop eating their damn KFC and sticking their greasy fingers in the government coffers...

richard.hipkin - 2012-11-02 10:02

The correct equation is just above... duh... LOOK.

ChiefGalaktus - 2012-11-02 11:02

Look again, the sums are now magically correct, it must be muti...

• FeebleGastro - 2012-11-02 09:10

This why in the Wonderfully! New! Democratic! South Africa you only need 30% to pass maths.

ChiefGalaktus - 2012-11-02 11:04

I think it was 40%HG, 33.333%SG in the old South Africa, if my memory serves me right.

• Barend.Jacobus.Engelbrecht - 2012-11-02 09:14

and yesterday news 24 reported SA as the worst math teaching in the world .... srsly .. just fire them all from BEE jobs. start over with people who are qualified and who actually PAID for their studies and u wont have this problem

jocelynrose - 2012-11-02 10:08

Because having your parents pay for your university degree definitely makes you more qualified for a position.\r\n\r\nBut go ahead, fire all the BEE teachers. I'm sure there are thousands of white folks who are willing to teach in the townships.

• paul.nel.7 - 2012-11-02 09:31

NO, actually if you look closely, the 6 is the answer for the division above it, ie 30/5. The answer for the 21/7 is below it and is actually correct ie 3. The teacher should perhaps use better coloumn layouts when she explains mats but her maths is indeed correct.

FeebleGastro - 2012-11-02 09:37

Maybe, but you need to use your imagination in overdrive.

• TheSingingHorse - 2012-11-02 09:32

Typical media BS . There is a line thru the six .Speak to the IT department on how to zoom in enlarge the image. The photograph is taken out of context.Shows the power of media and explains why people, nations, religious movements etc are brain washed and indoctrinated. Feed the nation bs... that is what you get out.So much of this going people cannot tell the difference. As Clifford.sithole.5 says it just makes white people make black people look stupid. Not Good.Much Ado about nothing again.

• ernest.phasha - 2012-11-02 09:34

If a child says a wrong answer, a teacher can sometimes write it on board for purpose of discussion and demonstration. Then correct it. The child who said a wrong answer will normally have to explain it, and be corrected. There is nothing about doing that during teaching. The problem is that the teacher is black, if she was white there would be a different interpretation (true!)

DuToitCoetzee - 2012-11-02 09:59

This time I agree with you!

• tirelo.phillimon - 2012-11-02 09:36

• DuToitCoetzee - 2012-11-02 09:41

Come one people!!! The answer can be the one from the sum above, but being in line with the sum in question just tells me that she was busy explaining not to just write the sum done horizontal, but use the method, showing underneath, to get to the correct answer because you can make a mistake when doing it as she indicate with the incorrect sum. Jitte tog!!! People will grab at any straw to entertain themselves. Doing that, is plain stupid. To think people put it on their FB. I will be toooooo ashamed because my intelligent friends will than know I am not as clever as they thought I was. If you cant see the line get glasses!!!!

• maureen.churchill.9 - 2012-11-02 09:43

No wonder your mind and body tries to release it with every chance it gets. • LeKoke - 2012-11-02 10:13

Gawd! the things that we blow out of proportion these days. what does the teacher teaching kids maths have to do with this census? Yes Census is/may be faulty - I am one of those who where never counted and some people in my office - so I know for a fact that it is faulty! but the teacher in this picture is not wrong - ###/**%& there is a straight line crossing that 6 , and on the far left just below the equation there is a 3 - on the very same line - the teacher shows how she got the 3 . Period! there is a flipping explanation why the 6 is very next to that question. ' She probably wrote the equation on the board - turned around and asked her pupil what the answer is - one of the pupils shouted ''its 6 maan' , the teacher asked the whole class - Is it 6 , and they students seemed to be in agreement that its 6 , she wrote it on the board next to the equation - she then cancelled it with that straight line going through 6 and said wrong! then said the correct answer is 3 - and showed them how she got it! For all we know - behind her could be written WRONG! just next to that 6!!! C'om let us not be blinded by something people

• logan.naidoo - 2012-11-02 10:17

The teacher was blocking the rest of the equation. Was actually 21/7 = 6-3

• talana.malherbe - 2012-11-02 10:17

Things will never work in SA as long as we see colour in our choices in life. Some people are critisizing ANC and some DA and sadly both our major parties are associated by the public by colour, ANC = Black and DA = White and therein lies our downfall as a nation. We claim to be intelligent people, the reason why we have forums like this is to voice our disagreements or agreements. What are we complaining about if we have such a warped sense of what is best of us or what is not. The day citizens of SA start thinking along the lines "what is best for me as a citizen of SA" and not what is best for me as a "white or black person" that day my friends, SA will prosper!

• rapollis - 2012-11-02 10:20

Morning people, the answer 6 relate to the question above which is 30 / 5 which equals 6, the answer to the question of 21 / 7 is just below on the left edge of the black board =3. The writing is all over the board so it looked like the 6 relates back to the question of 21/7. I hope I clarify this issue because I don't believe a teacher can make such a stupid mistake.

fanie.gerber1972 - 2012-11-02 11:04

Correct - but she could have work in columns to prevent confusion - at worst she need to sharpen up her black board skills.

• estee.mente - 2012-11-02 10:57

It could well be that, the teacher started by allowing volunteering learners to write their homework answers on the board as a mechanism to kick off discussions on what was done right and wrong. That's how we were taught back in the days.

• desmond.s.leaner - 2012-11-02 11:19

Can nobody see that the 6 is actually part of a stand-alone calculation: 30 divided by 5 equals 6?? How bitter do you really have to be?

• keedman - 2012-11-02 11:41

Reading this thread fascinates me incredibly. Clifford S(h)ithole elegantly pulled out a racist card for everybody to see and the rest of civilisation gets the blame. You see Mr S(h)ithole, it is people like you that are to blame for the demise of this country. How do you expect this country to succeed if you cannot see beyond your own personal racistic agenda? You see Mr S(h)ithole, there is a term for that. It is called an external locus of control. I don't expect you to understand the terminology, so in a nutshell it means you blame others for our own short fall. There is another terminology for it, better know amongst youngsters as the small penis syndrome. Do you have a complex Mr S(h)ithole? If you think about it, the country is supposed to be a democratic one and we are supposed to accept every citizen for who they are. However, it is people like you Mr S(h)ithole, that gives our country a bad name and with all due respect, we don't need you. It saddens me that you work in a hospital and yet you still have this attitude. You see, I have faith in the hospital I go to, but it is "patriots" like you that make me worry. How do I know that you will look after me if I am lying in your ward? You know, with a racistic external locus of control like yours? How do I know that you would care for my 3 year old daughter should she end up in hospital? Or what about my parents? It makes me think that the state of our hospitals is a direct result of stinking attitudes like yours.

• firstseed.mbeva - 2012-11-02 12:09

We don't know what was the teacher's question.May be it was True or False
