Chaos at VUT registration

2012-01-24 10:49

Johannesburg - Security guards used pepper spray and batons to control crowds outside the Vaal University of Technology, SABC television news reported on Tuesday.

It showed cellphone video footage of students in long queues outside the university on Monday, waiting to register.

The report said that students started pushing each other, causing security guards to intervene with batons, pepper spray and taser guns.

Kediemetse Mokotsi, the institute's manager for corporate affairs, told Sapa on Tuesday that it did not condone the behaviour of the security guards.

"These are new security guards that came late last year and were not aware of how to deal with such a crowd.

"The matter will be taken up with the relevant departments."

The guards were described as being "aggressive" but Mokotsi could not go into detail about the commotion between students and guards.

There were no police on campus at the time.

"Yesterday was the first day for registrations for returning students and each faculty was allocated a specific date for it but students ignored the dates on their letters and they came on the wrong day when they were not expected," said Mokotsi.

The university planned to register 2 000 students per day. On Monday, it was unclear how many students had queued up.

The Vaal police were not immediately available to comment.

Earlier this month, a woman was killed in a stampede outside the University of Johannesburg, where late registrations were taking place.

      Whitty - 2012-01-24 11:39

I see this as a good sign that Africa is changing, my guys are pushing for a better future,at -least they are not queueing and pushing each other in a pub or for grants.

      Spyker - 2012-01-24 13:48

Why do you not see this in Europe, USA, Australia and alike..?

You stole my comment! Waaaahaaaahaaaahaaaa! If that article was a Jeopardy question, my answer would be "What happens after reducing the pass-rate to 30%" I win, I win!! :P

      LOL grant!!!!!!!

  • kgomotso.radise - 2012-01-24 10:59

Its crystal clear that the UJ stampde was never a wake up call to some of the institution of higher learning. It looks like history might repeat itself

      Anthony - 2012-01-24 11:18

      again and again and...........

  • CarlS - 2012-01-24 11:01

It's a queue people. Those in front got up earlier. They made it their beeswax to be there before you. If you're in the back, tough cookie. WAIT YOUR TURN.

      E=MC2 - 2012-01-24 11:17

      stupidity breads stupidity unfortunately...

  • Tokoloho - 2012-01-24 11:07

Clearly sum of patrons commenting here are did not read tis section. It said nothing about a stampede. Vaal tech is one of best organised institution in our country. Its unlikely to have such.

      Thunukenenxeba - 2012-01-24 11:18

      Are you sho, Ha ha

      E=MC2 - 2012-01-24 11:19

Um TOKOLOSH - 1st line reads "Security guards used pepper spray and batons to control crowds outside the Vaal University of Technology"... why did they have to be controlled? Im sure they werent standing around discussing apartheid quitely...

      lindz.kok - 2012-01-24 11:27

the fact of the matter is that the security reacted for a reason, wake up ant start reading into the artical, studants started pushing the gaurds reacted to avert another uj incedent. hence why people are saying that due to the 30% pass idiots that are clearly barbarians get to go to university lowering south africa's education level internationaly causing riots and stampedes...

      Vermie - 2012-01-24 11:34

I do believe it is you who needs to reread o.o The people commenting here are mentioning a similar case in which there was a stampede. Oh and at the end of this article: "Earlier this month, a woman was killed in a stampede outside the University of Johannesburg, where late registrations were taking place."

      Tokoloho - 2012-01-24 11:53

As a former student who understand the enviroment of the institution. Can tell u this is far from the truth. It is unlike UJ where people are channeled to one space that will create stampede. U have to have been or attended the institution to understand. I guess media will always spice things up and get people who are quick to voice their opinions without reasoning first. But who am I to criticise those who are always right like Mr e=mc2. Did I say it right? Can u spell mine correctly then? Or u can't read.

      E=MC2 - 2012-01-24 12:06

i can read fine, thanks for asking. So we should reason with your comment even though it was incorrect TokoloHO? p.s. this is the area for people to voice their opinions, so make sure you have your facts straight before commenting otherwise people will bring it to your attention (by voicing their opinions)

      Tokoloho - 2012-01-24 12:25

I've noticed u are a permant resident here with a Pseudo name wich makes me question reasons that u are here. I can appreciate a person who questin the irrisponsibility of an institution or gov. Not a person who makes cynical remarks that towards other patrons and call it facts without supporting facts. What d u know about VUT? and u telling me about facts? I'll leave it at that.

      r.mashigo - 2012-01-24 13:04

we saw the video clip on sabc news dummy

      E=MC2 - 2012-01-24 15:09

ok tokoloho - firstly learn to spell. secondly, ive given all the supporting facts i need to prove that you are just wasting everyones time by coming up for stupid comments that in themselves have no supporting facts... I dont need to know anything about VUT... the article isnt about VUT, its about the idiots who are disrupting it!

  • Mike_or_Mpho - 2012-01-24 11:07

Typical, it happens in one place, so these guys need to copy it there too with the hope that they will make the news! Grow some brains!

  • max.maxwell - 2012-01-24 11:07

The blame must lie squarely at the feet of of the University! Lack of foresight and planning on their part!

      Kyle - 2012-01-24 11:14

so idiots who dont know how to stand in a que and NOT push have no part in this at all?????

      Vermie - 2012-01-24 11:37

Eh the University handed out letters with registration dates. The students failed to stick to them and all showed up on one day. "Yesterday was the first day for registrations for returning students and each faculty was allocated a specific date for it but students ignored the dates on their letters and they came on the wrong day when they were not expected," How was that the Univerity's fault? You'd think these students would have learnt how to read a date on a letter by now.

      Dave - 2012-01-24 11:44

Again, not condoning the resulting pushing, but the university should have had someone at the gates checking registation dates, and turning away those who shouldnt have been there, instead of allowing all the students to be crammed in passages and stairwells for hours. Hindsight I suppose, so lets hope next time will be better planned

      Peter - 2012-01-24 12:06

@ Vermie: i wouldn't hold my breathe dude. Everyday we find out what the true implications of a sub-standard / faulty IQ can do to a top it off too, these are the 'leaders' of tomorrows world. and Tokoloho, i put he blame SQUARELY on the prospective learners, not being able to read dates and just doing as they please

      marna.nel - 2012-01-24 12:25

Vermi- I study at VUT, I am also a returning student. We have never ever recieved letters stating on which dates which faculty registers. Second Years and juniors register 23 jan till 31 jan...that was it. and yes, every year it is a mess. Normally it is first time students trying their luck during senior registration.

      Deon - 2012-01-24 13:55

Maybe the students should read the letters from the university to register on the correct day.

    wee aaah lerning!

  • The-Azanian - 2012-01-24 11:12

The university facilities that the anc government inherited were built to support a minority white with the increasing education-hungry black population, anc must brace themselves for catastrophe if they doing nothing about it.

      lindz.kok - 2012-01-24 11:31

seems like you have a new south african standard matrick behind your name as well... SUB STANDARD, rather shut up if you only want to spew racism.

      The-Azanian - 2012-01-24 11:45

im wondering if its me or you who has that cant differentiate racial slurs and facts...lindz south africa needs you not your current attitude.

      godesha - 2012-01-24 12:15

@the Azanian. So why has your government not built any new university facilities to accommodate the education-hungry black population then?

      lindz.kok - 2012-01-24 12:22

i can state a dozen facts on here that will hurt and bring down a specifick race but it wont make those facts less racist... it is not my fault that the anc failed all those who voted them into power so miserably. your last comment just proved everything i said my boy

      The-Azanian - 2012-01-24 12:26

      brain cell deficiency...

      lindz.kok - 2012-01-24 12:33

      Hotkop - 2012-01-24 13:05

We did not stampede each other to death in the old days. The universities were build to furhter educate the civilised.

  • Nicholas - 2012-01-24 11:14

ANC government, Poor Service Delivery worse even in education? Instead of wasting million for parties why don't they think of educational institutions? The are many primary schools, secondery schools what about tertiary level? Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape doesn't even have a university, what does that read in someone's mind? Isn't that our Government doesn't bother about education?

  • Ian - 2012-01-24 11:15

ze lunneas en ze edukuttters, idiots

  • Katoolsie - 2012-01-24 11:16

Why is it still possible for people to register now?!?! They should have registered last year already! When I wanted to go to university, registrations closed in August of the previous year!

      Ndivhuho - 2012-01-24 11:19

registrations or applications?? I think you are confusing the two.

      paulmandlankosi - 2012-01-24 15:02

ANC... making people dumber since '94

  • Ndivhuho - 2012-01-24 11:18

why is it that these institutions dont give the student different dates for different facultie?? thats what they do @ wits and it works.

      Vermie - 2012-01-24 11:39

"Yesterday was the first day for registrations for returning students and each faculty was allocated a specific date for it but students ignored the dates on their letters and they came on the wrong day when they were not expected," said Mokotsi.

      Deon - 2012-01-24 13:59

They did, but the students ignored it.

      Mosebetsi Nhlapo - 2014-01-22 20:43

I think the intitutions should encourage senior students to register online or have tht facility if not yet available. I found it simple wth UNISA.

  • Shirley - 2012-01-24 11:23

When someone is trampled to death there is a BIG hoo ha but look at the behaviour!!! Did they learn nothing????? Now when the gaurds use pepper spray its wrong!!!! Cr@p-if you want to act like an out of control animal you should be treated like one!!!!

  • Oscar - 2012-01-24 11:32

    and this is news, why?

      E=MC2 - 2012-01-24 11:49

because some people did something somewhere that made someone want to right a story so someone had something to read... sometime :)

  • Irene - 2012-01-24 11:46

Don't blame the institutions. Blame the dumb morons doing the stampedes. So flipping stupid and yet they want to study further. ROTFLMAO!

  • Tulani - 2012-01-24 11:49

viva NMMU viva, in the 4 years i attendent at NMMU i neva even once, ques where not even long coz all faculty had different dates and different times in different streams in one faculty.....planning require exact execution no compromise, wrong date go home n come back on ur date n time.....

  • MrGuyT - 2012-01-24 11:54

  • Victor - 2012-01-24 11:56

Don't only blame the security guards, blame the incompentency of the university. They should have known that scores of students wanted to register. Why not make sure that u have allowed for more than enough admin personnel to accommodate the scores of students??? Where is the planning? Move away from the ANC lack of service and wake up. This is not zombie voters, but people.

  • Rainbow - 2012-01-24 12:01

    Vote ANC YEBO!!

  • braamc - 2012-01-24 12:02

Now they blame the "new security guards" that is new and don't know how to deal with the crowd. Point is they behave and think like savages. Will remain uncivilized.

  • braamc - 2012-01-24 12:06

Eish a better life for all, you will never come across such incompetence, theft and corruption, ill discipline,no common sense, actually nothing good than ANC politicians and supporters and youth. What a disgrace for human kind, nothing but oxygen thieves

  • Vuyo - 2012-01-24 12:33

It seems everybody with a matric wants to study at a university , despite the fact that there are many university graduates without jobs . I thought that being an artisan would be the most popular thing these days , as people need to open their businesses to survive . Big businesses have been shedding jobs (Retrenchments )for years , who then is going to employ these university graduates .

      Vermie - 2012-01-24 12:43

There are many more without University degrees who are also without jobs. Getting a higher education has never guaranteed a place in the work force but it does give you a bit more to work with when you apply for a job and a confidence boost in your own abilities.

  • Ben - 2012-01-24 12:56

  • Wanda - 2012-01-24 13:15

Your behaviour is all the same as those students, moronic! The Institution should have been more prepared for something like this to happen and put controlling measures other than just different dates into place. The students should not have acted in such a moronic manner as well, act white for once (Im sure you going to enjoy that). Vuyo you do have a point but I wouldn't want you mentoring my son!

  • appie.durand - 2012-01-24 13:29

I was inside the registrations yesterday and i completely condone the securities actions. They had no other choice but to use force to get them under control. I feel that it is the negligence of the university to let things like this happen. Secondly, we were NOT informed of different faculties registering on different days, the VUT is just trying to cover their own ass in front of the media!

  • appie.durand - 2012-01-24 13:35

The "new" security guards have been through 2 strikes at the same university in the last six months, and have the best crowd control that i have seen!!
