Durban - A woman and four children were killed when a fire spread through the Emanyaleni informal settlement in Chatsworth in the early hours of Saturday morning.

EThekwini Municipality spokesperson Tozi Mthethwa said that the cause of the fire was still unclear.

“The cause of the fire is not known at this stage and is currently being investigated. Mayor James Nxumalo visited the area to convey his condolences,” she said.

“He comforted more than 40 people who have been affected by the fire. It is estimated that 20 families have been affected,” she added.

Nxumalo said that he hoped that once the cause of the fire had been established, the community would work together to prevent further incidents.

"May the souls of the victims of this fire rest in peace. What happened here is very unfortunate and it is quite disturbing. I hope the relevant authorities will investigate the cause of this fire so that the community can work together to prevent similar incidents,” he said.
