Chewing gum hospitalises 200 pupils

Cape Town - Chewing gum was behind the hospitalisation of 200 pupils from the Trevor Manuel Primary School in Fisantekraal on Tuesday, said the City of Cape Town.

Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said the energy chewing gum had passed its expiry date, and contained large amounts of sugar and caffeine, which raised the pupils' blood glucose levels too fast, making them hungry and resulting in vomiting.

They were treated and were admitted to the Durbanville Medi-Clinic, the Kraaifontein Day Hospital, the Tygerberg Hospital and the Karl Bremer Hospital.

A few pupils found the gum on a nearby farm and distributed it to other students.

"The city's health department investigated the matter and samples of the goods were taken for laboratory tests," Solomons-Johannes said.

ja. they found 200 doses of gum on a farm, with caffeine ( that denatures rapidly with age ) and sugar at a high enough concentration per stick to induce hypertension, even though when initially manufactured they contained safe concentrations? I know theres a brain drain in this country, but crap like this insults even the intellect of "us dumb ones" who stayed behind.

You clearly dont unsderstand the living conditions of some of that families living in Fisantekraal. Because of a lack of literacy, children dont know any better. From a teachers perspective I see it as our duty not only to educate children but their parents as well. Never take things from others if you are not 100% sure where it came from. My heart goes out to the families who already lost young lives because of this incident. It is our responsibility as South Africans to look out for the children as they are our future.

You say "Because of a lack of literacy, children dont know any better." Bull sh1t!! What happened to parents teaching their kids right from wrong?

      Justine Ganser - 2011-05-11 09:29

Well said Marieka...some of these dim wits on here have gone all "political"...shame on them!!!! My daughter once saw a cookie, wrapped up still on the floor in the museum, she told her father and he said, "well eat it"...Thank goodness I have raised her well, as her reply was "No dad, I don't know what's in it"!!! (she is 8 years old), she makes me proud (I have raised my daughter single handedly from birth). She knows better. Parents should know better, illiterate or otherwise. I feel sad for these kids.
