Johannesburg - A child died and more than 40 others were injured when a bus rear ended another near Burgersfort, Limpopo on Thursday morning, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha could not immediately confirm the child's age. Both buses were transporting school children on the R555 between Ohrigstadt and Burgersfort.

"Paramedics and other services arrived at the scene and found the roadway obstructed with accident debris and the twisted frames of the vehicles. The wreckage of the front bus was pushed into the veld," he said.

"After triaging, it was found that one child tragically died and another was critically injured."

The other 43 had injuries ranging from serious to minor.

"After medics treated the injured children at the scene, they transported them to various hospitals for the care that they required."

He said the cause of the accident was being investigated.
