Johannesburg - Two children were killed in a fire at Victoria Embankment in Durban's central business district on Friday, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said the children, aged 1 and 3, were found severely burnt by police and fire service search and rescue workers.

He said ER24 would officially certify the deaths once police and fire services had completed necessary operations.

The fire apparently started around 12:50 on the second floor of a block of flats. The cause of the blaze was unknown.

The mother of the children was being treated by paramedics for shock.

Banks said the fire gutted two floors before being brought under control and traffic towards Durban had been closed.

No other people were injured in the fire.

A tragic sad case with so much heartache! Condolences to the grief stricken mother! I cannot imagine how she must feel.

The mother is grief stricken because of her utter stupidity! This is the equivalent of leaving kids locked in a car at a shopping centre. How on earth can a 'mother' lock children of that age in a flat and then go shopping??? Watch eNews for the full story. RIP little ones, your mother didn't deserve to have you.

Irene: If this is the case it makes it all the more tragic as this type of thing is happening more often! Children left to their own devices can very seldom have a good outcome! Poor babies!

Apparently the kids were left alone locked up inside the flat? What kind of a mother leaves a one and a three year old alone locked up????????? She needs to be arrested for abandonment! Those kids suffered a painful death all because of incompetent supervision. Who ever left the kids alone should be ashamed of themselves!
