Cape Town - The body of a 4-year-old boy who was reported missing over the weekend, washed up on Strand beach on Sunday, Cape Town's disaster management centre said.

Abukwe Themba was accompanied by his grandmother and uncle when he went missing at about 17:00 on Saturday, said spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes.

He was reported missing to the authorities at about 21:15.

"Following the incident, the officers of the city’s law enforcement and specialised services together with the police initiated a search mission for the child and found the body washed ashore at 03:30 this Sunday morning," he said.

Police have opened an inquest docket and an autopsy would be conducted to determine the cause of death.

There seems to be an awful lot of negligence when it comes to drownings these days. The total for 2012 is already 22 in the sea. Why do parents not make teaching their children to swim a priority. Just because you live in a coastal town does not mean your child can swim. The power of the sea water is underestimated and it is saddening when anyone drowns especially in the sea. These are accidents that could've been prevented. RIP - and may your parents learn a dear lesson from this tragedy.

I agree about the negligence bit, but knowing how to swim in the sea/surf will not guarantee that you won't drown. The parents should be held to account.

This is a really sad story, and to think I met a family member of this kid on Sunday in canal walk, weeping away in a store... Really hit me... I will always remember her voice and her tears that she shed when her mother called her to tell her about the death :( My deepest condolence to the family.
