Johannesburg - A man was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle cigarettes worth R200 000 from Nambia into South Africa on Tuesday morning, Northern Cape police said.

Police arrested the 32-year-old Namibian truck driver at the Vioolsdrift border post around 04:30, police spokesperson Sergio Kock said.

A search of the truck revealed 20 boxes of contraband cigarettes.

"He was arrested and charged under the Customs and Excise Act and the Tobacco Products Control Act."

The man was expected to appear in the Vioolsdrift Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

20 boxes?! That's two cartons, probably worth R200 each. Well done, crime fighters. Not.

The journo is not using the correct term. It should have been stated as "two cases" not "boxes". Any reduction in illicit cigarettes is a welcomed fight against this crime, regardless of the volume.
