Johannesburg - A man was granted bail by the Mahikeng Magistrate's Court on Thursday after being arrested in connection with contraband cigarettes, North West police said.

Abose Errsa, 33, an Ethiopian national, was granted R5 000 bail and had to appear in court again on 31 July, police spokesperson Pelonomi Makau said.

Police were tipped off on Wednesday about boxes being taken from a truck on the South African side of the Botswana border at Logageng village, and packed onto a bakkie on Botswana's side of the border.

Police stopped the bakkie on the way to Mahikeng, said Makau.

When they searched it they found 37 boxes of counterfeit cigarettes worth about R300 000.

Errsa was arrested.
