City-dwellers believe govt is corrupt

2012-10-22 13:14

Johannesburg - Nearly 80% of people living in South Africa's major metropolitan areas believe that politicians in the senior levels of government are corrupt, according to a survey released on Monday.

"A survey of 2 000 residents of South Africa... revealed that the proportion of people in South Africa's eight major metro areas who feel that there is corruption in senior levels of government is 78%," research company TNS's spokesperson Neil Higgs said in a statement.

Ten percent disagree and 12% gave a "don't know" response.

Higgs said most believed that the private sector was also rife with corruption.

"Seventy percent feel that corruption is just as bad in the private sector."

Eighteen percent disagreed.

"[This]... is now a well entrenched perception that has been largely unchanged for over six years, though the latest reading does show a small improvement," Higgs said.

In a related survey, also conducted among 2 000 people living in metro areas, TNS found that 48% felt that Public Protector Thuli Madonsela was "doing a good job".

Forty-two percent felt that government often ignored her findings.

"Of concern, though, is that only a half of people feel that the government is really attacking the problem [of corruption]," Higgs said.

"Perhaps linked to this is the perception that the government often ignores rulings of the public protector, [which is] an untenable situation."

Does this mean 80% is going to vote for a different party in the next election? I dont think so!

      Jeremy - 2012-10-22 14:21

Well, Poloyatonki, the DA appears to be doing a pretty good job in the Western Cape - and so far I've heard little or nothing about corruption in that province. So, you keep on voting for the devil you know. Me, I'll vote for a party that tries harder and appears not to be as arrogant, corrupt and incompetent as the ANC...

      Poloyatonki1.lee - 2012-10-22 14:37

Jeremy.. I will go through thick and thin with the ANC, they stood besides me during the dark days of injustice gov so why must i dump them now? I never thought i will live to see this freedom.

      Jeremy - 2012-10-22 14:44

Well, Poloyatonki, how about because the ANC isn't the party it once was under Mandela. Under Mbeki and Zuma, it's become corrupt, incompetent, arrogant and basically useless. So maybe it's time to make a change, instead of sticking with "the devil you know." That's what democracy is about.

      ken.grimblegrumble - 2012-10-22 14:53

@ Poloyatonki1.lee You are so blinded. The ANC you knew has long since departed this earth. As far as your hate for HZ, she was fighting for your rights (God knows why) before you were even born.

      sean.carbutt - 2012-10-22 15:30

@polio donkey and you will also be the first retard to jump ship. As soon as the proverbial hits the fan, you will be the first turncoat. Your are disgusting, to yourself, the black population and humanity as whole.

      ro.jhb.1 - 2012-10-22 15:57

Poloyatonki - with brains like yours its no wonder SA is the sh-thole it is. By your warped logic even if someone does you hard - the fact that they were nice to you yesterday means that all is OK. If you think the ANC today is the ANC of yesterday then clearly you were educated post 1994 i.e. you somewhat dumbed down. IN any event it was the UDM that freed SA not the ANC - they just arrogantly took all the credit!

  • sthembiso.jali.50 - 2012-10-22 13:29

corrections- the whole country knows that the government is corrupt.!

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-10-22 18:47

Knowing something is one thing, doing something about what you know is quite another. The sooner the majority voters in South Africa take their heads out of the sand and look beyond the pretenses of the corrupt and hypocritical ANC politicians the better South Africa will become.

      art5SA - 2012-10-22 21:13

Ain't THAT THE TRUTH!!! Wonder if the masses understand what CORRUPTION MEANS? Do they relise that the monies the Cadre's are stealing is meant for them? Doubt it!

  • willem.vanrensburg.562 - 2012-10-22 13:34

And still they will vote for the fools ...!! eish..

      Poloyatonki1.lee - 2012-10-22 14:15

What alternative Party do you have in mind?

      godfrey.welman - 2012-10-22 15:07

@Poloy...Jeremy already gave you the answer to case you missed it....its the DA

      lerato.kay.3 - 2012-10-22 15:38

People are conveniently ignoring some parts of this report, in as much as ANC or government is corrupt the article clearly states that 78% of people living in South Africa's major metropolitan areas believe that politicians in the senior levels of government are corrupt. Not only ANC has senior level politicians this include DA, COPE and even FFplus. A massive 70% feel that corruption is just as bad in the private sector, no wonder we are seeing these wild cat strikes it’s because of corruption in the private sector, but as usual forget about the private sector and target the government for all corruption in SA. It’s also funny to note that despite The Thuli for president hype only 48% felt that Public Protector was doing a good job, as far as stats are concerned 48% is a FAIL.

      art5SA - 2012-10-22 21:14

In the new South Africa... 22% is a PASS!

  • jerry.medina.756 - 2012-10-22 13:37

Disappointed with the survey, only 80% percent? I wish I could see the 10% retards who says there is no corruption.

      rob.gunning.1 - 2012-10-22 13:57

It's probably those that are part of the corruption.

  • Khofu - 2012-10-22 13:38

We don't believe it is corrupt, we KNOW it is corrupt!

  • chris.flack.750 - 2012-10-22 13:40

Methinks some city folk did'nt understand the question, hence not a full 100% outcome. Or maybe the "no's" were goverment officials.

  • robert.starke.98 - 2012-10-22 13:41

The ANC are vrot the core. Living in the Western Cape is like living in a different country, because everything works under the DA. For the rest of SA, it is nothing but a cess pool of convicts, corruption and theives. Zuma included

  • terrylee.heuer - 2012-10-22 13:41

    Absolutely correct!!!

  • Jacob Zuma - 2012-10-22 13:41

Like I...said can trust the ANC. We care for you. *snicker* - 2012-10-22 13:53

      ANC = Another Natural Criminal

  • luvo.luvos - 2012-10-22 13:42

Of course the corruption has reached blatant levels with Zuma being the chief instigator. The Nkandla development is a typical example of corruption having reached wild levels and JZ can't be bothered what the tax payers think. I battle to understand the mentality of those who wish to elect JZ for the next term.

      steve.ritchie.739 - 2012-10-22 13:56

I battle to understand the mentality of those who will still vote for the cANCer!

  • obadia.segwape - 2012-10-22 13:45

dat is sooo obvious wich planet do you leave in with your useless research

      andrez.kolesky - 2012-10-22 14:03

@Bobbe.Aap. Phew I'm finished, I am totally finished. I tell you, you made me laugh, the tears were even streaming down my leg.

      grant.montgomery.5074 - 2012-10-22 14:27

Please translate your comment into English.

      andrez.kolesky - 2012-10-22 16:57

      @grant. Part of the 10% I think.

      art5SA - 2012-10-22 21:16

Wonder if this RETARD "LEAVES" in SA?

  • BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-10-22 13:45

    Nooooooooo. D'you think?

  • Klaus - 2012-10-22 13:48

    remaining 20% work for cANCer

  • UncleShep - 2012-10-22 13:48

Kala.Bafazi...where ya at....bring ya line bru.......

  • Andrea - 2012-10-22 13:54

Eish, the 12% "don't know" must still be living under a rock somewhere and only come out when the lights are off.

  • denise.wilshire - 2012-10-22 13:55

Now with that survey in hand, go and knock on the door of the President. He will probably tell one of his protectors to spin the story and add a racist overtone to it. JMHO.

  • Sandile Bhoma Ka Nduli - 2012-10-22 13:58

Really there is no more about equality and liberty its about fattening each other ......referring to the top leaders of the leading party. This country is gonna be worse than Zimbabwe. WE ALL NEED TO PRAY FOR ALL OUR LEADERS.

      grant.montgomery.5074 - 2012-10-22 14:47

if SA ends up like Zim, where do the millions of saffes of all races go to?

  • rob.gunning.1 - 2012-10-22 14:00

    Well, there's a surprise

  • ken.grimblegrumble - 2012-10-22 14:01

ANC the party of the unwashed and illiterate. Nearly all supporters have a gang mentality.

  • ken.grimblegrumble - 2012-10-22 14:11

What they didn't tell you is that the MAJORITY have NO problem with them being corrupt.

  • tina.schilling1 - 2012-10-22 14:17

MESSAGE to the 80%'s.....SO then, LET'S DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT ... We need to get off our backsides and DO something...WALK THE TALK...write in to newspapers, write letters to councillors and Mayor, cc in the top nobbs in the Govt, go to Carte Blanche, blow the whistle, get opposition parties to stand up with us

  • brendan.r.murphy.9 - 2012-10-22 14:21

    Vote DA period

      Poloyatonki1.lee - 2012-10-22 14:39

We dont trust DA, what if they bring back apartheid?

      Annelize Grobler - 2012-10-22 15:50

@polo.... there will never be a thing as apartheid ever again !!! the DA is not the NP, the DA has been fighting the war against apartheid since 1958 ... they dont stand for that ...

      Mahlokwa Mokwena - 2012-10-22 15:53

we all know anc has failed dismally, but i'm not sure the da is the solution.

      seanrossouwslr - 2012-10-22 16:32

@Polo. Where did the national party go after 1994? They left the country, retired, or went to work for the ANC. The DA has been fighting apartheid for longer than you care to remember. All you see is white people vs black people. You are racist.

  • hjkavdkah - 2012-10-22 14:30

And other surveys showed that south Africa is the Safest - Wealthiest - Enriched - With No HIV - With no Murders - With no Rapes OF ALL THE country's on this planet I am moving to South Africa - I am going to invest all my money in South Africa

  • tiaan.truter - 2012-10-22 14:41

lol those 10% of people that think they not corrupt are probably from the ANCYL or ANC itself.Bunch of mindless sheep

  • mshiniboys - 2012-10-22 15:02

This is not about what we think but it is all about the situation at hand and the truth especially when it comes to stealing money thus killing our currency.

  • johan.harlaar.9 - 2012-10-22 15:03

I hope the truth will come out after he is the ex-president. He may also be called a "great Statesman' like Mbeki or Kaunda and all will be swept under the carpet.

  • andrew.mackie.90 - 2012-10-22 15:06

A pity it was only 2000 residents, had this been a wider survey of metropoles this percentage surely would have been much more. The unfortunate situation is that had this been done in rural areas it may not reflect this high percentage due to the multitudes who are not kept informed.

  • Madelein - 2012-10-22 15:13

I feel ashamed off all these white South Africans still making racist comments about their fellow black South Africans. Altough I also believe that the current leadership is currupt, I will not stoop so low as to insult members of the ANC - they have the right to support which ever party they wish. No wonder ANC members are afraid to change their votes to the DA - we will get nowhere by insulting the ANC member's intelligence and mentality - this will only put fuel on their hatred for white people. I don't believe that the DA will bring back apartheid, and I don't believe that the ANC's current leaders are doing a good job, but I do believe we should stand together as fellow South Africans and make our voices heard. Being racist is not going to promote growth in our country - we whites have to accept that black people are the majority in South Africa and that a total white leadership in this country is just not possible if you want to maintain peace.

      UncleShep - 2012-10-22 15:15

      jerry.medina.756 - 2012-10-22 16:21

You hit it in the head Madelein. Black people are named savages, uneducated and all sorts of names by news24 readers. To even think to vote for the DA among many Black people after enduring a barrage of insults from white people here is tantamount to treason.

      tyroymike3 - 2012-10-22 16:45

I believe people are becoming desperate - black and white . The facts are blatantly obvious to members of all political parties in SA - politician's are only in it for the financial opportunities . We need a new crop of leaders who function according to intelligent principles and creative logical thought . All we seem to have is hasbeen revolutionaries stuck in the murky past and no idea of how to build a collective future - for all our children - black , green and white . Giving the DP a chance may be a nightmare for many but who else is there ? Cope went down the loo and left us high and dry. We are in crisis at present , hard decisions need to be made or we are all in the poo !!!

      Stlouis Heidtmann - 2012-10-22 17:43

were just calling a spade a spade thats all

      croix.mactee - 2012-10-22 18:13

How can anyone "bring back Apartheid" if the ANC has already done that through their racist policies of BEE and AA? If a Company (for example) is not 100% BLACK OWNED, it CANNOT secure a tender for state contracts over R10million. EXCLUDING certain races based on the colour of their skin, is RACIST - helloooooooo . . . . . . . !

  • seanrossouwslr - 2012-10-22 16:27

This should rather read "City-dwellers KNOW govt is corrupt".

  • Gill McCain - 2012-10-22 17:17

The 10% that don't think they are corrupt are likely to be the very corrupt that they were asked about, those that "don't know" are just thick.
