Johannesburg - Cocaine with an estimated street value of R993 020 was seized from a bag belonging to a passenger in transit at OR Tambo airport from Sao Paulo to Lagos, the SA Revenue Service said.

No arrests have yet been made.

"A search of a backpack... resulted in the discovery of two foil wrapped [parcels] containing a white substance," spokesperson Luther Lebelo said.

"The substance tested positive for cocaine, which weighed 3.46kg with a total value of R993 020."

When asked if there were any arrests, Lebelo said the bag was checked in.

Lebelo said police would use the information on the bag to determine who had checked it in.

If the passenger was already in Nigeria, authorities would contact the relevant authorities in that country, he said.
