Cape Town - The coldest maximum temperatures for June were recorded in three places in the Western Cape on Sunday.

The coldest places on Sunday were Cape Town, Kommetjie and Clanwilliam, reported Die Burger.

In Cape Town’s city centre, where hail painted the town white, the maximum temperature on Sunday was 11°C, with the previous coldest day in June in recorded history being 13°C.

Farmers have expressed pleasure about the cold weather, saying it was good for grains and pastures.

Cold weather spreading

While cold conditions in the Western Cape would be letting up from Tuesday, bitterly cold conditions were forecast for the Free State and Northern Cape on Tuesday and Wednesday, with minimum temperatures below freezing, reported Volksblad.

The cold fronts that hit the Western Cape over the weekend were now moving southeast, affecting the Northern Cape, Free State, western Lesotho and the southern North West.

The next cold front for Cape Town was expected on Saturday.

Meanwhile, residents and visitors to Sutherland were on Monday still trapped in the town due to heavy snow.
