Comatose student on life support dies

2011-02-21 09:31

Pretoria - A student who was hit by a car during the University of Pretoria rag festivities two weekends ago, died on Saturday morning.

Anthony Bowden, 20, a second-year student in Hospitality Management at the University of Johannesburg, had been connected to life-support machines since the accident.

The machines were going to be switched off at 14:00 on Tuesday, but he coughed moments before, as his family was leaving the room.

Robbie Parker, Bowden’s cousin, said Bowden hadn’t moved again since the cough.

“He died early [on Saturday] morning, on his own. There was no brain activity anymore,” Parker said.

Bowden had gone to rag with Parker. He was hit in Queen Wilhelmina Avenue at 17:55, as he and Parker were crossing the street.

In every moment we are gifted to experience, there is learning. Life as we know it limits our scope of this learning and as such we see death as terminal. The spirit remains within each of us who remain on this mortal coil of those who move onto their next challenge. Tough to appreciate that many die way too young, so talented and gifted and yet, we need only to learn. Condolences to Anthony's family, friends and all he touched. Ciao. Colin.

That is just so sad. I can only hope that some justice is done and that the person that did this is suitably punished. When will South Africans ever learn to drive??????

      Mark - 2011-02-21 10:58

fair enough. but I do recall he had been drinking and was in the middle of the road when hit.

      Clanger - 2011-02-21 13:05

I have not any article stating that the driver of the vehicle was at fault here. Its a little unfair on your part to assume so. If it was the drivers fault then i agree with you, justice should be done, however if Anthony was at fault here, can you imagine what the driver of the car is going through at the moment.... So quick to pass judgement.

      hf44083 - 2011-02-21 13:11

I agree totally with Clanger, you don't know who was to blame, students are also stupid and irresponsible, don't be quick to judge the driver when you know nothing of the details.

      hf44083 - 2011-02-21 13:14

Sorry to hear you had such a great loss, time heals all wounds, as a rape victim and one lucky to be alive it took a long time to heal from the trauma but life does go on eventually. Your son will always be in you hearts and memories. Glad to hear your family have been able to heal from your positive reply to these parents

The saddest thing is losing someone so young who has not lived that much to bear testimony of a life well lived. To the family of Anthony just know that you are in our thoughts and prayers during this harsh time that you are facing. May his soul rest in peace.

Why drag politics into this you stupid twat! A young man has lost his life and his family has been left in agony. May you be spared a similar fate. There is a saying, keep your words soft and tender in case you have to swallow them. Have some respect!
