Johannesburg - A Welkom man plans to sell his comic book collection, which he estimates is worth R250 000, in an online auction, it was reported on Sunday.

The Sunday Times reported that Jan Hattingh was hoping to raise R150 000 for his collection of comic art, comic books and figurines through the online auction house, Bid or Buy.

His collection of 4 711 comic books, most still sealed in their original packaging, included a 1944 edition of a Batman comic.

"I estimated that the comic books alone - and this excludes those signed by some of the artists - are valued at $17 000," Hattingh said.

He also planned to sell 15 original pencil and ink sketches of Batman, Supergirl, Superman, Hulk and Wonder Woman.

Hattingh was ready to part with his collection so he could dedicate more time to his new hobby of photography, but would keep a 45cm-tall bust of Iron Man.

"I'm keeping it for the kids, but children nowadays don't realise the value of the stuff," he told the newspaper.

Children don't appreciate the value of things nowadays cause the adults don't teach them how to appreciate it.
