Johannesburg - There has been a call for a probe into allegations against the KwaZulu-Natal community police board chair Desmond Mntambo, the provincial department of community safety said on Monday.

Community Safety MEC Willies Mchunu wrote to the provincial police commissioner and the head of the department on Monday informing them of the allegations in the Ilanga newspaper, the department said in a statement.

The newspaper reported that Mntambo had criminal records and that he was currently under investigation for allegations of fraud and interfering with police investigations of the ongoing violence in Richmond, outside Pietermaritzburg, the department said.

"I... appeal that proper process be followed and this matter be investigated, the source of the allegations as well as truthfulness or otherwise of these allegations, after which the provincial community police board will be informed of the findings as well as the affected member," Mchunu was quoted as saying.
