Cape Town - A 14-year-old girl is recovering in hospital after she miraculously survived a rape and a brutal assault, allegedly at the hands of a 22-year-old suspect in the small town of Grabouw in the Western Cape.

The man appeared in the Grabouw Magistrate’s Court on charges of rape, attempted murder and robbery, reported the Cape Argus.

Meanwhile, community members have banded together to gather essential items, mainly toiletries, for the girl, who lives in the Rooidak informal settlement.

The incident happened on Saturday night. The girl was allegedly grabbed by the suspect, dragged to a vacant lot, then raped, beaten, stabbed in the neck with a screwdriver and strangled. The suspect then allegedly covered her in a pile of rocks and left her for dead.

The newspaper reported that the victim, naked from the waist down, waited for the suspect to flee the scene, then crawled and walked home while bleeding from her genitals, ears and mouth.

The suspect was arrested after she named him.

The young girl’s aunt was devastated as she spoke to Eyewitness News of the vicious attack on her niece.
