Commuters set Gauteng train alight

2011-03-04 08:46

Johannesburg - A Metrorail train, travelling between Johannesburg and Pretoria, was set alight on Thursday night, Passenger Rail Agency of SA said.

"This incident occurred following a ticket verification action at Irene station by Metrorail staff," spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng said in a statement.

"It is alleged that commuters that were onboard the train that were caught without valid train tickets set the train alight."

The train was set alight between Kaalfontein and Oakmor, she said.

No one was hurt and the 26 passengers that were on the train were taken to their destinations by taxi.

Metrorail's Gauteng Manager Tembela Kulu said: "We cannot tolerate such actions from commuters that refuse to pay for services and we will intensify our efforts to work with the police and the community at large to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested".

Mofokeng said the line was being cleared and would be assessed to ascertain whether it was safe to operate Friday's morning peak train service.

Typical SA mentality if it's not for free BURN the damn thing and the same for schools and so on, barbaric. But tomorrow they will ask where is our transport.

      warickw - 2011-03-04 09:38

I just don't understand the mentality maybe if they didn't burn down the trains every time they get upset the tickets would be cheaper! Its the same as me going to my place of employment smashing the windows and burning down an office and then asking for a increase! I just don't understand.

      York Hunt - 2011-03-04 09:40

Yes. But they won't ask. They will DEMAND!

      gumboguru - 2011-03-04 09:42

The ANC taught them well. If you don't get what you want, burn it down so nobody can have it.

      Baas-Julius - 2011-03-04 10:23

@Concerned Citizen , the truth hurts doesn't it.

      ThePlague - 2011-03-04 10:25

The fact that so many people agree with @Farmerjohn is once again proof that racism is not dead.

      Marietjie - 2011-03-04 10:47

Die transport hy nie meer daar nie! Die voete hulle moet maar loop ..

      piney - 2011-03-04 10:48

@ ThePlague... I never recall anyone saying that racism was dead in the new SA. You must live in a hole?

      Kaleidoscope - 2011-03-04 10:57

While i agree that these black people are illeterate and barbaric to commit crimes like this! I think however comments from farmer john using the K word is highly offensive to blacks who are educated and not voting for the ANC! Racism is still very much alive i see by all the high five's.

      2c - 2011-03-04 11:07

On the one hand racism is very much alive and well by this farmers comments and on the other hand by people burning down everything when they do not get their way. It worries my to no end at how we will be able to build a nation by all parties involved in such deroggative statemens. I am a white woman, and I want to nuture and see prosperity for all. It is for the good future of ALL people living in SA. Only we can change it, even if it is our attitude and careful postings on this public forum.

      Phigment - 2011-03-04 11:22

@Farmerjohn and co: WTF is wrong with you people?! The K-word? Seriously?!! By the way, I'm a white, Afrikaans DA supporter, so feel free to direct your racist bullsh*t at me. You disgust me. You are the reason I am ashamed to call myself an Afrikaner.

      Gareth_Clitt - 2011-03-04 11:44

@ Phigment..So join the anc then. If I'm not mistaken 90% of the over 3000 farmers murdered were Afrikaans. So go to the anc if you love them so much.

      4daluvofSA - 2011-03-04 11:51

wow Famerjon has 73 "likes" and responses which supports his opinion! Says a lot about some white people on this site!

      Baas-Julius - 2011-03-04 11:53

@Phigment I’m sorry you are ashamed of your culture Phigment. I choose not to transform from my culture to a lawless, moral less, self servicing day to day living culture. Gareth_Clitt is right, you should leave the DA as you seem to suit the ANC more. @4daluvofSA Yes it does, it says were gatvol!

      4daluvofSA - 2011-03-04 11:58

@Baas-Julius, we were gatvol years ago! We are now just reaping the rewards! Good luck to your childrens future!

      bosleen - 2011-03-04 12:00

@ThePlague, you must be black, and your name says it all!!!

      Baas-Julius - 2011-03-04 12:10

@4daluvofSA What rewards are you actually reaping? Is killing innocent people and breaking infrastructure rewarding for you. Damn we could have built a whole lot of cheap junk buildings and old trains for you guys to go f-up while you leave the functioning things alone. And btw, you comment on the future of my kids is as idiotic as the people who burnt this train down. Your kids are also going to be here with no schools or education, so good luck to their future to.

      4daluvofSA - 2011-03-04 12:12

Everytime you post a racist comment or "like" a racist comment and a black person reads it always know that you are somehow contributing to all the negative bullsh*t that is happening in this country! Don't come running complaining about crime, BEE, corruption ect...Why must we feel sorry for 5 people who hate hundreds of us? Just doesn't make sense! I am black and I am sending this to all the racist white people on this forum so no need to tell me about a handful of "black racists".

      4daluvofSA - 2011-03-04 12:21

yes @Baas you are right. I kill people, I rape woman, I steal I am corrupt, I burn trains,I stink, i got fake degrees, I stole all the cars that are parked in my garage. The company that i built that also employs your brothers and sisters was built from money that I got from a heist and bank robberies. At the end of the day I go home with a big smile on my face because i worked hard to get to where i am today and these are the rewards of my hard work which my children are going to benefit from in future...

      Baas-Julius - 2011-03-04 12:29

@4daluvofSA I'm glad you did well, hope you did it all by yourself and no BEE or tender irregularities were involved. I still can't see the future for your kids though. Best of luck, I'll agree to disagree.

      Thangy - 2011-03-04 12:39

@Phigment, sad state of affairs. @Farmerjohn and the likes are what keep ppl like Julius Malema as relevant as they are today, for as long as ppl like @Farmerjohn exist ppl like Julius will continue to pop up all over the country. Little do you know, chats like these are printed and distributed all over the townships to breed hate against ALL white ppl. These comments you ppl make reflect how you live your lives and will, I believe, ultimately be your downfall. You all think your brief, racist comments sit here and stay here??? dont be foolish!! these chats are being spread like wild fire. Yes, you feel good now and have given all of us a window into sick minds but remember you will lie in the bed you make!!

      Kaleidoscope - 2011-03-04 12:47

You blacks and whites deserve each other, it's a pity coloured people have to be caught up in the middle of your constant racial war! Can't you people ignore colour, we are human beings to begin with! Can't you look at people like Manyi, Zuma or Steve hofmeyer as ignorant fools rather than generalising and making comments based on the skin colour of people.

      SayWhat? - 2011-03-04 13:02

@Thangy - "WOW!! High fives all round for @Farmerjohn calling black people the "K" word!! If he is indeed a farmer, would explain why so many of you are being murdered on a daily basis" - So you agree that whites are being murdered out of hate in this country??

      4daluvofSA - 2011-03-04 13:05

@Baas, Funny that's what your forefathers said to our forefathers about our future a couple of years ago....I guess it's just a vicious cycle.

      Thangy - 2011-03-04 14:31

@SayWhat? considering the comments left here wouldn't you? HATE BREEDS HATE! FACT! You aren't victims!!

      Cheq - 2011-03-04 15:29

Ofcourse, the government and police will undertake an endless investigation to a point there might not be any trains anymore.... There needs to be a civil war here to rid these brainless overloads.....

      Hempo - 2011-03-04 15:54

@Kaleidoscope, I agree. I'm a post apartheid whitey that just want a country that is fair for ALL. What good is this hate doing anyone? Whether you are black, white, coloured, indian etc. Racists of all colours are slowing down the process of turning this into the best country ever! Fok man, let's put down the arms and harsh words and accept each other. Yes the ANC is screwing up the place, take hands and vote them out!

      Stephanus - 2011-03-04 16:58

My word, stop with the racism nonsense already. Grow up will you!

      moiraine - 2011-03-04 17:25

@ all of you, STOP behaving like children. It all boils down to respect and who does respect start from - yourself. You cant expect other people to respect you first. So whites respect the blacks and they will respect the whites and blacks respect the whites and they will respect you back. If you wait for others to be nice to you before you are nice to them you will wait a very long time. Grow up.

      onetickie - 2011-04-06 17:59

Simple, they deserve and must be left to walk. Smash & Trash South African mentality at its best.

  • AJ - 2011-03-04 08:58

"work with the police and the community at large to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested" - how the hell did they get away, if they were caught on a train without tickets? Did people just watch them run off?

      Nico Pretorius - 2011-03-04 09:12

They did not just watch them run off, they actually arranged taxis for them. I am appaled

      Kenko - 2011-03-04 09:13

The same 26 people on the train that set it alight, were transported to their destinations by taxi. That is if I read the story correctly. It is an invitation to set more trains alight, and they will be handled with kid gloves.

      warickw - 2011-03-04 09:39

The "commuters" responsible for setting the train a light should have been locked in the coach and roasted!

      MKAM - 2011-03-04 09:40

@Kenko, you are reading it wrong. The 26 passengers are the good ones (with tickets). I don't know how they let those thugs run away. I thought they must handcuff them if found without the ticket....

      jouplesier - 2011-03-04 11:30

mkam, nowhere in the article does it say whether the 26 includes the freeloaders........stop reading what you want to read

      Chillepeppa - 2011-03-04 13:16

@@jouplesier, i read what MKAM read, that the 26 passengers mentioned were not the arsonists. They never said EVERYONE on the train was without tickets either, so I guess the writing could have been a bit more descriptive...

  • Andre - 2011-03-04 09:05

Let's destroy today what was created yesterday. Let us demand service delivery tomorrow and destroy more while we demand it. Then let us blame everyone else because we do not have anything. At no time do we have to take responsibility for ourselves and behave with a social conscience.

Heere's a WILD idea, HOW ABOUT YOU BUY A FRIKKEN TICKET!! It's still much cheaper than petrol or taking taxi, the least you can do is buy a bladdy ticket! This is why the train is so awfully full every day in the afternoons! It's right to take them off the trains, because they fill up the trains and make the paying customers flippen uncomfortable! Yesterday I had to Wolverine my way out the train because the people barged their way in, after NOT coming through the ticket check-point but through the fencing of the station and they didn't even allow us to get off, until an old guy had to scold them out! This is why people get put in the hokkie-of-shame at Parow Station, if found without a ticket, until they pay up! They should do it more often. I still say they should have people checking tickets AS PEOPLE GET ON AT EACH STATION IN EACH CARRIAGE! Use our money that us paying customers pay everyday, and hire more people!!

What happened was surely perpetrated by a bunch of thugs/gansters. They must be punished for what they've done. Its however funny how the generalisation and racist remarks tend to pop up its ugly head on every opportunity on these forums. You really think that someone relying on railway transport to commute between home and work would set a train alight? Common guys.

Stop paying your taxes, stop paying your council rates and watch the Government come to a grinding halt.Don't go to work for a month and watch what happens. However your comments disgusted me even more, you are welcome to freely voice your opinion, but please could you refrain from such derogatory statements on a public forum.

      Totman - 2011-03-04 11:06

I also do not like what John said, but I think he is bursting of frustration. John seams to be tired of actions based on mentality. It does not give him the right to speak like that, but he, as other, tried many other things, but it does not work. What can he fall back on? The ugliest way he knows. John is saying these ugly words, but other do these ugly deeds. As you know deeds speak louder than words. If he was saying this in my face I would have smacked him down. However, I do recognized the frustration in his words. We must look at what makes people saying ugly things like that. I must admit. Some of my fellow South Africans make other loosing their cool and it does have a reflection of certain groups. I recommend you continue show your frustration John. Please just stay from using words that are get people to look differently to your comments as they should have. Concern Citizen. I never see you reply to some-one when it is the other way around. You said his words discussed you more than the action causing it. The action was the reason for his words. Get your priorities straight. I also feel sometimes to look for something stronger to say, but can't use his words , due to who I am or against myself. In short. It is wrong and ugly words what he had used, but stop pushing him there, while knowing that there is no other way that he can use, except from showing his frustration.

Problem is it's frastrating to commute with a train especially between JHB and PTA, most of us who buy tickets have no choice but to tolerate the bad service we get from metrorail, but as for the guys who don't buy tickets and use the train for free this guys they don't care for anyone, they think they own everything, usually they hangout in-between coaches smoking weed, if the train runs late the are the first to complain but have no tickets, this are the guys who make trains to not be safe because if they is security in the train they end up fighting with them which puts innocent people in danger, this is why when they rant commuters stay out of their way and because most security guys live in the same township they are afraid to stop or standup against them in fear of being mugged after work when they get back to their township. If you ask most commuters they will tell you if they was another altenative cheap transport to use they will use it and stop using trains, unfortunatly they between JHB and PTA they isn't.

      Totman - 2011-03-04 11:21

Emmamimie. I recon the gov realized they can't solve these problems and now some concentrate to pocket as much as they can. A nature rule. The strongest and cleverest will survive. The answer is in the middle class. The only possible solution can come out of the middle class. That is maybe a reason why they do not get built as fast as should be? thabiso. I feel for you man. I know those frustrations. If all will pay and you get people that run the system properly with proper guards that keeps the rubbish off it will be the solution, but you know the change for that.

I wish I was there. It would have been so much fun

  • Mike Hoxbig - 2011-03-04 10:42

And the idiotic minister of transport wants us to use public transport to avoid the tolls? Maybe he should lead by example.

      AGENT - 2011-03-04 12:55

HA HA HA HA HA !!!! lead by example you say. good one.

  • Lyndon - 2011-03-04 10:55

Interesting: A couple of thugs burn the train, a whole community of people get crucified. Nowhere in the story does it say "Black", but immediately the assumption is made. Obviously no one else uses trains and taxis - only black people. And then some people who cannot understand English and get the facts wrong, also want to comment. Good grief people, if a white family are a bunch of paedophiles, did anyone call all white people paedophiles?

      PB - 2011-03-04 12:05

Lyndon, what percentage of arson cases on trains / schools, etc. in the last 50 years were caused by ANYONE that were NOT black? Maybe 0.1% Unfortunately the perpetrators of certain crimes are typical of a certain racial group, so when one of those is reported, one automatically assume that the statistics are correct. Whether it is White-peadophiles, Black-murder/arson/armed robbery/rape of 7-year old virgins to cure AIDS etc..... Maybe the media should be allowed to report the race of each criminal in their reports, then this specific issue would not be in doubt.

      catij001 - 2011-03-04 12:24

Lyndon, I am white, and although I do agree with you. PB does have a point. People (coloured, Indian, black and white) are getting sick of this behaviour and not too long we will have a revolt in this country.

      Peter Mac - 2011-03-04 18:47

Lyndon - Are you serious? Have you ever lived in SA?

      Zion - 2011-03-05 15:45

PB: the best comment so far. You could not have put it better.

  • Ruffstuff - 2011-03-04 10:58

Who is reading this -- if they out burning all these 'can't hive’s' - How can they be reading this blog? Anyway if there is a strike these days for more pay (which is right if they are earning below the bread line), but what do these strikers do - they start burning property, up turning rubbish, breaking public property, destroying all the infrastructure in their way etc, etc - Same as the train burners. It is just a lack of community pride. All this is blamed on apartheid - I say not in your life it is the government of the day. What can you expect the government of the day are to busy spending the money on themselves. Bottom-line is let the burnt out train carriages be used so others can see the unnecessary destruction caused by morons.

      Ruffstuff - 2011-03-04 11:00

read as - if they out burning all these "can't have's"

  • Colline - 2011-03-04 11:08

is this the end of the story? how can it be? there was no mention of how it's apartheid's fault...

They burn/destroy things when its not suitable for them, then they go on a rampage because it then affects them. The logic? or don't they have any which seems to be the case. Its the African way!!!!! no wonder Africa is always suffering and the world gets the blame. They should try when their hands do wrong they should cut them off and keep the legacy of the African way.

      Pascal - 2011-03-04 12:27

Last kick of the dying horse...with the burning we hv killed the boers dream of controling majority.

  • Kobus - 2011-03-04 12:02

Whats funny is that racism gets thrown around again. There are good african citizens and there are the uneducated (lacking mentality) that dont belong in the city in the first place, they come to the city looking for work only to be dissapointed and then thats where the problems start... Some of these comments do make alot of sense and i agree fully its unacceptable , you wont ever see white people or indians do that, not even educated africans who work hard just like we do for a honest living. Its a real shame , but in all races you will ALWAYS get people who will act like rats and idiots and be a disgrace to the rest of the race they were born in.

  • Sue - 2011-03-04 12:07

Spot on Andre. These idiot should be thrown into that same fire so that we can get rid of them completely. Hope they are found by those people who don't wait for the law to deal with scumbags,

  • 4daluvofSA - 2011-03-04 12:10

Everytime you post a racist comment or "like" a racist comment and a black person reads it always know that you are somehow contributing to all the negative bullsh*t that is happening in this country! Don't come running complaining about crime, BEE, corruption ect...Why must we feel sorry for 5 people who hate hundreds of us? Just doesn't make sense! I am black and I am sending this to all the racist white people on this forum so no need to tell me about a handful of "black racists".

      multicon - 2011-03-04 12:28

      Respect is generally earned.

      catij001 - 2011-03-04 12:34

Good on you dude. I am white and you are right - spot on. However, the opinions being voiced here is the last couple of years frustration of no action on goverments part. If gov keeps on preeching race then this will never stop. Gov makes sure that we are all aware of our differences and promotes it. Yes, I know that balck people had to endure Apartheid for many years. BUt consider that, i as a 35 year old, did not even know about Apartheid until the day Mandela was released. Even if you did and you spoke out about it, you never spoke after that again. because you would have been dead.

      luke.snoobab - 2011-03-04 12:44

I am white and I spent most of my formative years in a small rural community in the Transkei as my parent had a farm nearby. If only we all look for the similarities between our cultures instead of the differences this country would move forward at light speed. Remember during the soccer world cup , there is a great sense of unity between everyone, black or white, If only that feeling lasted londer than the final whistle of the last game I agree with you. The majority of these posts are very negative and not constructive at all. Some of you will call me naive, blindly optimistic ect. Continents were not discovered by captains that were pessimistic. I hope you can let these racist comments affect you like water off a ducks back

      Totman - 2011-03-04 13:12

I am not 100% sure what you mend in one of your sentences, but thought of telling you that there other forums, where more black readers are on and it is the same on them. Meaning out of the majority you will find the most racists. I am personally think that a lot of frustration is causing these racists remarks. When you are one on one with the same people they do not act like that, but when they can be anonymous/distanced from other they tend to generalized issues. The ones that use race, to express their feeling, are always commenting, but the other do not even bother to get in these ugly debates. If you multiply the few that does, you will quickly realized that the vast majority are not racist just unhappy and does not make it a race issue. Rather a class/standard issue or a government incompetents issue. They are not racist! Just unhappy people! You also have your stirrers that comment bluntly without a intelligent explanation. Once again, action speaks louder than words and that cause remarks. Lets stop with the actions and maybe the words will follows. O, yes! You can mark yourself as likable. Maybe your 5 is wrong.

      SayWhat? - 2011-03-04 13:16

"4daluvofSA" - Handfull of black racists?? You got to be kidding me! You need to open your eyes, very much oblivious of what's going on around you! Stop trying to justify all these dumb, barbaric things going on by blaming a handfull of white racists! What about the black racists comments, are you trying to justify that too?? In your eyes, can blacks be racist??

      4daluvofSA - 2011-03-04 13:19

@Cat & Luke, I agree with you 100%. I am also 30yrs old. I remember a few things about apartheid but back then to me it was just a way of life. I have seen and have been involved in a lot of things growing up but luckily my parents thought me well and I don't always carry the burden of apartheid on my back. My parents never even mentioned apartheid when I was growing up but i knew about it. I went to a model C school in 93 and was one of the first 7 black people at that school. I was called a K word many times at school and was always involved in fights because of that and ended I being the only one who was punished :-( They had just starded enrolling black people a year ago in 92. I have many friend (all educated) whom we sometimes discuss these issues with and most of the time N24 comes up and it is always about the racist comments. These kinds of comments make you wonder when you see the next person either in the boardroom or at a shopping mall but mostly at the work place. You wonder if this colleague is one of the people who participate on this forum...That is not good!

      moiraine - 2011-03-04 17:47

@4daluv I agree with your comments, however please repeat it again and swap the words black and white around as it works exactly the same the other way around. Or are you saying that it is ok for black people to post negative, racist threatening comments and it doesnt contribute to all the negative bullsh*t around? As soon as black people make racist comments here then white people will automatically say" you see, we were right" Yes, there may not be as many black racists on N24 as there are whites, but ther readership probably has a higher proportion of blacks.Go and look at THe Sowetan, there are lots of down right racisst, threatening comments on there. What about facebook and the infamous "one white infant, one bullet" Can you not see that just as when you get upset about white racists, white people get upset about black racists?

  • keng - 2011-03-04 12:18

Surely burning trains is actually a good idea. If we burn all public transport and taxis the government will have to give the people free cars. This will create many jobs in the motor manufacturing industry. Next we must cripple the internet and destroy all computers, this will also help with unemployment. Finally we must burn all public buildings starting with universities and libraries lots of work for the building trade and printers.

      Kobus - 2011-03-04 12:24

they are already doing that with universities in dbn lol

  • catij001 - 2011-03-04 12:18

Does anyone know of a different planet I can immigrate too? All these people who made the racist comments below, you are know better than the idiot that burnt down the train and no better than Mr Jimmy Manyi. Two wrongs doesn't make a right. Just so you know, I am white. You keep on voicing your opinion that black people are idiots and that they are runniong this country into the ground. You are probably teh same people who, during social gatherings, say that you did not agree with the Apartheid regime. However, you are not setting a very good example. They are only responding to what you have made them beleive they are. I agree that this goverment is run by a bunch of idiots who has no idea how to harnes the power that has been afforded to them but how you are resoonding will only make things worse and not better. WAKE UP MAN!

  • netra20cool - 2011-03-04 12:39

I see this country is going nowhere looks like few employed people are paying tax and the others are enjoying benifits on dere Tax Money and if they wud b told to pay for any service then they will burn it! I think this country was doing far better in Apartheid atleast dere were Laws to punish such stupid behaviour!
