Compensate Lenasia residents - Malema

2012-11-23 22:08

Johannesburg - The government must compensate the people whose homes were demolished in Lenasia, expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema said on Friday.

"Give them money and land to go build," Malema told a group of people in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg.

"Land is your right... and we must never feel ashamed that we [are] building houses."

He said it was government land, which meant it belonged to the people.

The African National Congress and government should be embarrassed by what happened, Malema said.

"From killing people in Marikana to demolishing houses.

"On their behalf we accepting their embarrassment," he said.

Malema inspected three areas where houses were demolished in Lenasia two weeks ago.

When he arrived in extension 13, community members sang and danced. Women stood around shouting: "I love Juju".

Malema inspected the area. He was joined by suspended ANCYL spokesperson Floyd Shivambu and suspended secretary general Sindiso Magaqa.

Malema and his entourage climbed over the rubble of the demolished houses.

When Malema arrived at the front door of a woman's house, she ran out and dropped to her knees at his feet and cried. Malema comforted her, telling her: "Don't cry."

He said the woman was brave, because when demolishers had tried to tear down her house she had gone inside and refused to leave. In the end her house was spared.

"We salute this woman. She has courage," Malema said.

You've been crooked

He said the government was targeting poor people because they did not have the money to defend themselves.

"They target those who don't have money," Malema said.

He pointed to a block of flats near to where some houses had been demolished.

He said the government would not demolish the flats, because it knew the people who owned them had the money to take them to court.

"You'll find these ones [the flat owners] have a hand in it [the demolitions] because they want to expand [their own building]."

The African National Congress was turning on its people, Malema said.

"It can't be that the ANC... is eating its own people," he said.

"They must give you alternative land. You must have a piece of land. It's your right to have a piece of land."

Malema told the group not to start rebuilding their houses, but to find alternative accommodation until a solution was found.

"Those who have suffered from demolition, be strong. We want you to be compensated... You've been crooked," he said.

"We've come to give you support, even if there is nothing we can do. We can tell you: your pain is our pain."

Malema also inspected extension four, Lenasia.

People came out of their houses with their children to catch a glimpse of him.

He ended his visit by attending a closed meeting with residents.

Cde Malema is right, these people must be given a piece of land

      dragonfire47 - 2012-11-24 00:28

and do what with it besides squat

      bobby.jaan.92 - 2012-11-24 03:05

Why MUST they be GIVEN land? Because they are poor? Because they are not white? Non-blacks in this country must pay for their land and pay rates and taxes on it as well. No - what they MUST be GIVEN is the opportunity to have a job and income (which they porbably have in any case otherwise how were they able to afford the houses now being demolished?)

      dennis.vermaak.5 - 2012-11-24 04:44

Excuse me !! As a white person, no government has ever given a piece of land or anything else !! I HAD TO WORK FOR EVERYTHING !!

      Kevin - 2012-11-24 07:37

Joe surely you mean given the opportunity to purchasae land legally...?

      francoisjacques.malan - 2012-11-24 08:25

I agree with Malema, they've been cheated! The government cheated them! They should have been given alternative housing before their houses were demolished, not the other way around! This is almost the same as in Zim, just happening with black houses instead of white farms.

      simson.moller - 2012-11-24 08:56

Joe, Malema is not right. What should happen is these people should 1) Go out and get a job. 2) Earn money through honest work. 3) Stop squatting and buy their own land and home. That is exactly the problem of the "previously disadvantaged"! They believe that they should be given everything for nothing, just because others have something they don't. They don't think that what others have, have been worked for, and earned fair and square, because idiots like Malema spew crap out of his mouth and the dumb majority actually believe him! Go out and earn it. No job, speak to your beloved ANC, BEE is sure to provide....

If ANC ''ignore all rules'' and again elect Zuma in Mangaung, if DA keep failing of having powers to comprehend URGENT need for formation of 'mighty' alternative parties. so be it. we (the masses together with other opposition parties ), should take matters into our own hands and COMPEL Trevor Emmanuel to be a presidential candidate for peoples justice and development - a party that I suggest to be formed,if need be - Trevor can keep his membership and be loyal to anc BUT serve the purpose... to MESMERIZE and attract majority of DA/ID and 60% of ANC members. Through US (common people) he can be the next president.damn i love this dream too.

      william.letsong.5 - 2012-11-23 23:44

These people built their own PROPER HOMES (not shacks) on land that was sold to them fraudulent without any assistance from government.

      bobby.jaan.92 - 2012-11-24 03:13

Ja Kagiso - you are so 'right' - they (the whites) got all of that for free and didn't pay taxes - everything was for free and just given to them. They also got their education for 'free' - they didn't have to study as the knowledge just streamed into their heads because of apartheid.

  • douglas.reid.921 - 2012-11-24 04:17

Truth is this would not happen in Sandton. There are checks and balances which will prevent bonds being obtained before all the rights are authenticated. Somehow this slipped thru the cracks, who is going to pay the banks for the money owed? The system is there to protect the people and instead it is punishing them. This whole saga didn't happen overnight, government had lots of time to address the issue and stop the people from building. To knock down houses when there are people living in shacks is disgusting.

Our government is bending down for ''BAAS'', like ANC Women's League, kneeling for Showerhead. Baas is owning thousands hactors, where in turn canconstruct or build whatever pleases them without plans and approval, on the land they inherited chainly from their racist forefathers. Government officials must visit places like Diepsloot or Alexandra for a week to see how African people are subjected to. They should be ashamed, applying the old rotten tactics on their people.
