Polokwane - Four people died and 16 people were injured when five vehicles were involved in an accident on Matlala Road, about 5km outside Polokwane, on Tuesday evening, paramedics said.

"Upon their arrival on scene they found a sight of complete carnage... two minibuses, two light delivery vehicles and a motor vehicle were involved in this accident," Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said.

"Reports from the scene indicate that two vehicles collided and then the other three vehicles crashed into the primary accident scene."

The entire road was covered with accident debris and a few people were ejected from the vehicles.

Fatal injuries

"Upon assessment of all the occupants they found that a man and woman tragically lost their lives during the accident," she said.

"Two people were found to have sustained critical injuries and tragically died at the scene due to the extensive injuries sustained during the collision."

Eight people were found to have sustained serious injuries and eight people sustained minor to moderate injuries.

All of the injured were treated at the scene and transported to hospital for further medical care.

The road remained closed to traffic until all vehicles had been removed from the scene and the debris cleaned up.
