Johannesburg - A confession by a co-accused directly implicated Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir in a crime, the Palm Ridge Regional Court heard on Monday.

Desai Luphondo confessed after the four were arrested last month.

"He said he committed the crime and went on to implicate accused one [Krejcir]," investigating officer Freddy Mashudu Ramuhala told the court.

Ramuhala was under cross-examination by Eddie Classen, for Krejcir.

Krejcir, Luphondo, and two members of the Hawks, Warrant Officers Samuel Modise Maropeng and George Jeff Nthoroane, are applying for bail.

They were arrested last month and face charges of kidnapping, assault, and attempted murder.

The charges relate to the alleged kidnapping and assault of an East Rand man over four days in June.

His brother, named Doctor, who worked at OR Tambo International Airport, had apparently disappeared after Luphondo allegedly handed him 24kg of tik to ship to Australia.

The State alleges that Luphondo was Krejcir's drug pusher.

The consignment did not reach its destination, and the brother was allegedly kidnapped as Doctor could not be found.

Confessed to the crime

Classen asked Ramuhala if he understood the difference between an admission of guilt and a confession.

Ramuhala said Luphondo had confessed to committing the crime and told a captain at Johannesburg central police station how the crime took place.

Magistrate Reginald Dama turned to Andre Steenkamp, for Luphondo, and asked him if he was not concerned that Classen was encroaching on his client's matter.

Steenkamp said he was fine with Classen's questioning and allowed him to continue.

The clean-shaven Maropeng and Nthoroane waved and greeted relatives in the public gallery.

Krejcir, looking confident and well, asked his son Dennis for a cigarette before he was led to the holding cells with his three co-accused.
