Johannesburg - A convicted murderer out on parole was wounded during a shoot-out with police in Tshepisong, Soweto, on Monday, Gauteng police said.

Police followed up on information about the man, said to be in possession of an unlicensed firearm, Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said.

"Upon arrival, they knocked on his door and identified themselves. The suspect responded by firing shots at them."

Police returned fire and the man was wounded.

"The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital in a serious but stable condition and is under police guard."

During a search of his house, police found two unlicensed firearms believed to have been used in robberies in Tshepisong and Kagiso.

The man would appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court soon.

If he fired first, he would have been better off dead. Good that no policemen were wounded.

Could be several reasons why they release a convicted murderer and robber. 1.He might have served the minimum required before eligable.I dont think so 2. He committed robberies, with the current corruption, who knows what he promised them..for his freedom 3. Incompetant people on the "Parole Board" just rubber stamping their work 4. A scheme to try and recover some of the money from the robberies (this is a practice which is employed and occasionaly bears fruit) What ever the reason - I aggree with the the "shoot to kill" policy.

"A convicted murderer out on parole..." ?! This sentence makes no sense. So does this happen regularly? Now I really feel safe.

Once a criminal, always a criminal!! Parole is a joke for serious offenders.
