Cop: Sunday Rapist treated humanely

2012-07-26 13:35

Johannesburg - Johannes Jacobus Steyn, dubbed the "Sunday rapist", was treated humanely by the police, the High Court, sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court in Alberton, heard on Thursday.

"I was being human to him," Constable Quiet Menong told the court.

"He even shook my hand for treating him humanely [when he was handed over at the Krugersdorp police station]."

Steyn is accused of murdering schoolgirls Louise de Waal and Lazanne Farmer.

He is also charged with 11 counts of rape, 10 of sexual assault, 10 of kidnapping, one of attempted sexual assault, one of attempted kidnapping, and two of assault.

No reaction to arrest

Menong was one of the officers who transported Steyn from Margate to Krugersdorp after he handed himself over in October last year.

He testified that Steyn showed no reaction when he heard about his arrest on the radio.
"I looked at him to see his reaction, but he was just quiet."

Steyn's lawyer Anton Lerm has asked why his client was arrested on October 13, but only transported to Gauteng the following day.

He has been arguing since Wednesday, during a trial within a trial, that his client was forced into making an incriminating statement.

However, Menong said the reason for the delay was that the officers had been working and were tired.

‘Not left alone in vehicle’

"Everybody was exhausted. We didn't want to risk being involved in an accident because we were exhausted."

Lerm alleged police spent the day swimming, braaing and drinking and had told Steyn they had brought guns because there was an order to shoot him on sight.

"Not in my presence, sir," Menong answered, adding that no one had the power to make such an order.

Lerm said his client was left in the police vehicle at a toll gate en route to Krugersdorp to lure him into escaping, but Steyn had known he would be shot if he did this.

"I was in the vehicle with him at the toll gate. That's a lie," Menong said.

Court went into recess for Judge Sita Kolbe to decide if Steyn's statement, made to a magistrate, would be allowed as evidence.

The 11 girls Steyn allegedly attacked between 2008 and 2011 were all aged between 11 and 18.

The 36-year-old pleaded not guilty to all 37 charges against him on Monday.

Let's face it, they probably said a bunch of stuff like this. So what? This pig admitted raping and killing. What did he expect, a medal and a piece of Kentucky? You have to be in government to mess up and be rewarded.

"I was being human to him," Constable Quiet Menong told the court. which is more than I can say for myself. I would have treated him like the animal he deserves. I'm so glad I'm not in the police force.

      martin.britchford.5 - 2012-07-26 15:42

if it was me he would have run, cuffed and i would have let a burst from my rifle go down range. fineeeeeeeeshed

      jody.beggs - 2012-07-26 16:22

The should let him go and mob justice take control , let the mom vent her anger on his balls then set him alight and watch him burn .... for 5 min , put him out , let a doctor treat him , check he's ok , then start again. Damn the man, save the SA woman from rapists...

  • dianne.neyt - 2012-07-26 13:47

  • Hermann - 2012-07-26 13:54

Another demon that should face the fire squad and not the court.

  • cj.venter - 2012-07-26 13:57

why should he be treated humanely anyway? it's not like he did the same for his victims.

      arthur.hugh - 2012-07-26 14:06

Exactly my thought. A slow death is too good for this cretin.

  • raeez.omar.5 - 2012-07-26 13:57

He burnt a child alive but yet he wants sympothy cos he was left in a car at a Tollgate or left in a car while the officers were braaing...They should have shot the pig on site.

  • Kelly Lundberg - 2012-07-26 14:13

He turns himself in and then pleads Not Guilty!?!? is he serious? He is a cold blooded Murderer!!!!

  • Bianca-Anne - 2012-07-26 14:13

I don't think he has anything to smile or laugh about. He deserve no better treatment as the treatment he gave to the innocent victims, actually they should have burned him while having a braai, just be accident placed his hands in the fire ... just a little accident!

  • Arnoldus.DuToit - 2012-07-26 14:30

Drop all charges and set him free. Just make sure you drop him at my place, he will never be heard from again.......except the yells and screams I would record and upload.

  • Bless Boswell - 2012-07-26 14:35

Please will someone answer this question. Have been asking and asking... If a charge of rape is laid at a police station, surely they collect DNA? Then if the accused denies rape the DNA can be checked? Has DNA not been collected in any of these cases? How is it he can claim innocence?

  • vusi.mpela - 2012-07-26 14:44

The poor man, does he not take the time to consider what he has done to those poor girls and their families. Do these inhumane humans think they can just get away with whatever the hell they want and then plead that they were treated unfairly..... shame .... torture him for life

  • carolyn.dewrance - 2012-07-26 14:45

This man should be strung up and whipped and set alight to burn to death.

  • illuminatedj - 2012-07-26 14:48

Who will be his next victim now

  • Jaco - 2012-07-26 15:14

I would have begged him to try and escape.

  • jvwesthuizen1 - 2012-07-26 16:09

A Slow death would be more suitable. Peace by peace, for all 11 girls and the family of those he hurt. I would suggest cutting him in 11 peaces, starting with his legs etc. Hanging and instant kills are not the solution.
