Johannesburg - A 45-year-old police officer has been arrested after stabbing a man with a knife at a shebeen in Setlopo village outside Mahikeng, North West police said on Sunday.

Captain Adle Myburgh said the 51-year-old man was drinking traditional beer with the officer at a shebeen, at about 08:00 on Friday.

The victim was assaulted and stabbed at the back of his left shoulder by the police officer, Myburgh said.

"Police were called to the scene and the witnesses at the shebeen pointed out the officer. He was then arrested."

He will appear in the Mmabatho Magistrate's Court on Monday.

There is no difference between cops and criminals these days! How is anyone to respect the law then?

There is no law to respect.

Now that is exemplary behaviour. Police officers are supposed to be the backbone of society, someone even tiny little children can trust and look up to. Punishment should be as hars as is allowed by the law and should include community service.

The docket and evidence will go missing and the witnesses discredited

ill disciplined officer, This guy he's too old to be carrying around Okapi's (a knife) stabbing fellow citizen's. Now this a bad exemplar and a disgrace to our SAPS members. Shame on you, Big 45year old Policeman, who is supposed to be protecting our society, but instead he is helping in tearing it apart. This police boys just because they've got barges, they can do anything they like in our community. Its high time the SAPS review their recruiting strategy,Or else at de end the won't be a difference between a police officer and a Tsotsi (thief) or shall is say a Skelm......2lt Dr. Mo J. Thanks

I think it is time we had a national database of knife users/owners in this country. Everybody that buys a knife must have a background check to see if they are mentally capable to be allowed to buy a knife. Oh, hang on, they must first get a nationally accredited competency certificate to pre-qualify in order to get a licence to get a knife. Better yet - BAN KNIVES!! We can learn to eat with forks and spoons alone, not so?

News 24 with all due respect stop labelling 'off-duty' cops as police officials, they are just mere citizens just like anyone else can get outraged. There's a huge difference between on and off duty ask any grade-R pupil.

There's no difference between an off duty and an on duty police officer. What you are saying that is when he is at work he needs to have morals an up hold the law by when he clocks out he can turn into a murderer, robber or a rapist but the next day at 8 o'clock he needs to regain his morals and act like a cop. That was one of the stupidest comment I've eve read
