2012-04-06 13:09

Mahikeng - A police station commander was arrested in Swartruggens, near Rustenburg, for possession of R135 000 worth of illegal cigarettes, North West police said on Friday.

At about 23:00 on Thursday, crime intelligence, organised crime and public order policing units responded to a tip-off which led them to the policeman's house, said Brigadier Thulani Ngubane.

Twenty-seven boxes and 611 loose packets of cigarettes were recovered.

The policeman, 43, and his uncle, in his late 50s, were arrested and would appear in Swartruggens Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, Ngubane said.

In a separate incident earlier on Thursday, a Pakistani tuck shop owner, 28, was arrested in possession of 136 cartons of illegal cigarettes in the Rustenburg CBD.

The recovered cigarettes were valued at R30 200 said Ngubane.

The man would appear in Rustenburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Da police system is rotten to da core, frm cele to the seargant, bt it daznt start with cele, it starts frm the 1st citizen hmself. I say lets do away with the current system of policing n go back to amakhosi, der was no lengthy trials justice was swift n fair. The whites just exposed us to something we just cant get used to, think about the billions of rands that could b saved, with the lawsuites n everythng

This government should rather change the name of this country to CIRCUS instead of wasting money on changing street names. Recent south african news is making the whole world laugh at the bunch of \comedians\ we have.

  • Piet - 2012-04-06 14:21

That ciggies was part of a bribe... Bets anyone????

  • louis.langenhoven - 2012-04-06 14:28

The bad thing about corruption is you mostly see just the tip of the iceberg. Very unlikely that this cop is just by chance in the ciggie smuggling business. He most probably stole it from the SAP13 stores or took it as a bribe from an even bigger criminal who is getting away with something much more serious and so the cycle goes...

  • Willem - 2012-04-06 14:52

    Find and shame the whistleblower

      Cassandra Olivier - 2012-04-06 16:06

  • Buti - 2012-04-06 17:36

    Is it because of greedy?

  • Eric - 2012-04-06 18:20

This is what happens when you "deploy" ex MK terrorists to senior positions instead of promoting the decent, hard working cops through the ranks! Selebi much? I hate the ANC!!!!!!

  • Thozeka - 2012-04-07 15:43

When we see or read about such things, we often ask ourselves where this country is going? A lot of people are just greedy and seem to praise money morethan anything! Its a real shame hey

  • debbiewiblin - 2012-07-12 22:15
