East London - A police officer and a wanted criminal died during a shoot-out in Maclear, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

"Warrant Officer Zamekile Mngeniso was killed on Sunday when he and two colleagues followed up on information about a man who was linked to several crimes," Brigadier Marinda Mills said.

A shoot-out ensued after police pulled over a vehicle travelling in Maclear. Mngeniso and the suspect, Siyabulela Hlathika, were killed.

"We arrested two people in the vehicle and confiscated a firearm."

Mngeniso is the third policeman killed in the line of duty in the Eastern Cape this year. He had served as an officer for 10 years.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta sent condolences to the family.

"Not only is this traumatic and unbearable to the family, but the impact is equally severe to his colleagues."

My thoughts and prayers are with both families at this time. Both families will be mourning the loss of a loved one and my condolences are with them as they struggle to find answers to all the questions going through their minds at a time like this.

Ever since Bheki Cele brought in "SHOOT TO KILL" more cops have been killed than criminals. Was this such a good thing..rather bring back the death penalty.

Ingie I dont think so more cops would be dead if they were having to ponder whether to shoot or not....

please someone in the police force take note of the following points: >screen of the recruits should be very strict, police force is not for people who are looking for jobs > pre appointment training should be intense > the trainees must be subject to intense training preappointment and those who can't cope they must be released. > the appointees must now be subjected to real training in policing and administration, maybe for 18monhs This nonsense of appointing the daughter and the son of so and so is the problem >
