Cop electrocuted in hostage drama

2012-01-19 22:43

Johannesburg - An Ekurhuleni metro police officer was electrocuted during a hostage drama in Kempton Park on Thursday, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

Inspector Mveli Nhlapo, in his late 30s, was pursuing striking workers who had taken train passengers hostage, said Superintendent Vusi Mabanga.

He said strikers boarded a train in Tembisa just before noon and held passengers hostage. Police were alerted and waited for the train as it approached Kempton Park Station.

Mabanga said the strikers attempted to escape when the carriage doors opened as the train reached the station platform.

While police were in pursuit, Nhlapo was electrocuted.

"The circumstances of the electrocution are unknown at this stage. An investigation has been launched by SAPS and an inquest docket opened," he said.

Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said three men were arrested and charged with intimidation.

She said no other officers were hurt in the incident.

But Capetown is the most violent city, What a lod of crod. I really want to know how much it cost to make em change the stats to say so.

      Alfred - 2012-01-19 23:58

The title of the study was misleading since the only statistic they took into consideration was murders per 100 000 people. Rape, armed robbery, assault, hijackings etc never even featured which doesn't quite fit my interpretation of "safe". Anyways, condolences to the family of the cop. Completely avoidable death and the idiots responsible who are only being charged with intimidation should be charged with a helluva lot more in my opinion.

      wilma.botts - 2012-01-20 00:14

if u listened to the report it was done in Mexico and is not valid here

      VOVO247 - 2012-01-20 07:35

WTF this got to do with an electrocuted police officer?

      Hallo - 2012-01-20 11:11

Aaaah get over it hippies. Cape Town does not only consist of the v&a and the pretty southern suburbs. Open your eyes before it blows up in your face.

  • Matthew Patrick - 2012-01-19 23:33

So, what you're saying is that Pollsmoor should be relocated to Gauteng and that the Cape Flats is actually a Utopia?

      Matthew Patrick - 2012-01-19 23:33

Sorry, this was for you, Getafix.

  • Denzil - 2012-01-20 00:58

"Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said three men were arrested and charged with intimidation" Under the Causation Clause - they must be charged with Murder. If the strikers were not breaking the law - then the policeman wouldn't have lost his life. His death is a direct cause of their actions.

      Odicito - 2012-01-20 05:41

Finally somebody addressing the issue in the article, and I agree!

      kholofelo.theko - 2012-01-20 08:34

@Irukandji, that's BULL,"The circumstances of the electrocution are unknown at this stage." And you think the officer was stupid, the real idiot is YOU. It aint no fun...

      Zion - 2012-01-20 08:41

Irukandji's explanation is the only possible and plausible one.

  • Ashwin - 2012-01-20 07:30

What a shocking story. Its electrifying news.

Making fun of someones death. Very classy

      Merven - 2012-01-20 11:47

mheystek, if you are going to cry for every time someone gets hurt or die, you'll be crying yourself to death.

  • Newsreader - 2012-01-20 07:38

I assume the cop died? Or did he survive? Is he in hospital? That was a minor detail the incredibly gifted New24 team forgot!

      Merven - 2012-01-20 07:48

      Are you surprised?

      Betweenuandme - 2012-01-20 07:49

Not clear is it? I'm thinking maybe the cop didn't die as an inquest docket was opened and not murder?

      Lindiwe Skosana - 2012-01-20 07:51

Please check in your dictionary what electrocution means dear. AND the article clearly states that an inquest docket has been opened, like DUH!

      Siso - 2012-01-20 08:07

      @newsreader the cop died.

      Justfornewstwentyfour - 2012-01-20 12:27

      Newsreader - 2012-01-20 13:23

Lindiwe Stupisana - Duh!! What has electrocution got to do with confirmation of death? I have been electrocuted a few times and am still here to say you are dof!

      Lindiwe Skosana - 2012-01-20 14:05

Electrocution is DEATH by electricity, now that's different from an electric shock. Go get a decent education before you start making a total ass of yourselves people!

      Lindiwe Skosana - 2012-01-20 14:41

What you experienced was an electric shock, electrocution is DEATH by electricity. Stop making a fool of yourselves people, get a decent education.

  • Kagiso - 2012-01-20 08:00

and ofcourse if it was white cop all sorts of comments and Condolences would have been posted, as usual the racists here dont give a hoot about black lives.

      anthony.swart - 2012-01-20 08:13

If you look at how the western white world has to constantly aid Africans in Africa from drought and hunger and genocide you will quickly realize that its the blacks who care less for life any life for that matter. And remember it wasn't the NP that withheld critical medication from HIV-Aids infected people it was the ANC 400 thousand needless tell me?

      vann.coke - 2012-01-20 08:20

Comments like this and people like you keep South Africa in the apartheid era! Get with the program! Frankly its people that have the same mentality as you that prevents us from moving forward as one nation!! Some food for thought Kagiso!

      Zion - 2012-01-20 08:44

Kagiso, carry on we have become immune to the race card: The one you draw is always the joker.

      Daniel - 2012-01-20 09:11

Always about this white and black crap!!! A life is a life !!! When will we be able to walk and drink together like the brothers we were meant to be ? Freedom will be in our actions as a civilized nation.

      Justin - 2012-01-20 09:46

Yet we are the ones that throw our unwanted babies in rubbish dumps or the velt? or hack our brothers or sisters up at a shebeen just for their cell phone or R20???

      rianadk - 2012-01-20 10:36

WTF are you on about bru?

      Hotkop - 2012-01-20 10:43

Kagiso. You clearly don't know what racism means. Your comment is racist.

      mheystek - 2012-01-20 10:56

I don't hear Kagiso posting any condolences. 'Nuff said. If he was a bigger person (which he's not) he would have said condolences (which he didn't). So, Kagiso, STFU (which he should).

      Truth24 - 2012-01-20 11:48

Ja, Im sorry but my capacity for any emotion which remotely resemble empathy has quite frankly run out. This morning again. Robots are out (for over two weeks now) yet 300m down the road they're all gathered and stuffing the faces at the local take away. Kagiso, you're right - I don't give a flying f*ck anymore.

      Merven - 2012-01-20 11:57

      @Kagiso, like when Eugene died?

      Jason - 2012-01-20 12:36

      he was very passionate hey

  • Thokozane - 2012-01-20 10:36

Condolences to the family. I think its wise to first read the story before jumping onto a keyboard, the officer died in the line of duty while pursuing striking workers who had taken passengers hostage. He died trying to curb crime that we sing about on a daily basis, and he died trying to save our relatives and friends. I was hoping to see more positive comments but some idiot somewhere has to bring in race. Lets not let his death be in vain.

      Tshidi - 2012-01-24 09:29

he was passionate about his job

  • Mc - 2012-01-20 11:21

haai shame on u str8, he was stupid by doing his job, the next thing ul complain that the police dont do anything, i think ur comment is stupid, u should have just kept your mouth quite

  • margaret.mead1 - 2012-01-20 12:08

I just found out what 'trolling' is - it's wandering completely off the subject. I'm amazed at how much trolling there is on this report. Lest I be accused of the same thing, I am very sorry and shocked to read that this policeman's life was lost when trying to deal with strikers holding hostages on a train! What a terrible thing to do to the passengers. So often the strikers' numbers are expanded by mere thugs, who have no conscience at all, and get sheer pleasure out of whipping up anger and violence, with absolutely no regard for the law or humanity. Will this now be a murder investigation? Or culpable homicide? And who will be held as culpable?

  • Marlene - 2012-01-20 12:19

Did the policeman die? I assume so, as there was no report on his condition at a hospital?

      Tshidi - 2012-01-24 09:25

      he died

  • Justfornewstwentyfour - 2012-01-20 12:24

    K. Big thing here news24 missed - did he peg? i mean, trains electricity is quite a lot of electricity, and usually results in death, but what if was electrocuted by one of those things you get in electric lighters? then he's fine. otherwise he dead.

  • Peter - 2012-01-20 14:27
